Would people really rather keep Toby than get this guy?
Its a tough call - if we got Toby signed to an extension - no release clause (i.e. he is fully committed) - then I would prefer Toby - even with the health risks. I think he is better today, and will be for the next couple of years - which is our best opportunity to win something.

If we cannot sign Toby - I really don't want to replace him on the roster with anyone who does not have the potential to be better than Toby - don't give me a journeyman CB who is adequate, but not a star. De Ligt is a star in the making - who plays exactly how we want to play.

If De Ligt gets close to reaching his potential then the prospect of as many as 10 years with him is better than a few more with an ageing Toby.

Someone put it much more eloquently than I am able to...but you get a de Ligt/Sanchez partnership that could be one of the best in the world for a decade. Our Vidic/Ferdinand.

That was me! I'll take some credit over here for that idea as everyone hates me in the Grealish thread.

Not to mention the concerns over Toby's fitness and whether Poch now prefers Sanchez to him (which I suspect he might).

Ajax? 4 Champions League/ European Cups
1 Europa League
1 Cup Winners Cup
2 Euro Super Cups
2 Intercontinental Cups
Pretty good pedigree
Ajax are no longer at that pedigree that I'm talking about and you know that. Sure they are one of the most storied clubs in world football but they aren't that anymore.

Ah I see we are now at the point in which SC engages in its yearly exercise of thinking a young, inexperienced player from a lesser league is better than a world class player. Good to see. I’ll be back when rationality re enters the thread in 2 weeks time

Not a chance in hell the pair of them would stay with us for that length of time.

Likely true, but I didn't think we'd have Eriksen for 6 seasons either. The younger we get them the more likely chance we have of keeping them for a long time, get them to love Spurs. Plus with a spine of de Ligt, Sanchez, Alli, Eriksen, and Kane for the next 5 years we are competing with anyone in the world. New stadium, Poch still here, that team can win titles. Its not implausible to think you could keep a group like that together especially is we can do deals at 200,000/week like is reported Kane is going to be on.

Your ability to be wrong about everything is really quite impressive.

Have you considered joining the Green Party?

Until he reaches 22/23, realises he's the total dogs bollocks and asks for a wage we can't afford to pay him... :shifty:

But hey, things are gonna change in regards to wages, right?

RIGHT? :playful::playful:

...assuming that the team around De Ligt in 5-10 years time is as good as the team we have around Toby now though! It's not an easy, no-brainer decision, but I'd probably take the bird in the hand now rather than the two in the bush later.

It's £8m more than we paid for Davinson Sanchez.

Doesn't sound so crazy in that context.
