I like the idea of getting a real statement signing in for CM, but if we've sold Grealish on coming here and then pull the rug out from under him, I'd feel really gutted for him. If the fireworks do happen, I still hope we get JG in as well; there is plenty of deadwood we can either sell or loan to bring him in and give him the game time to develop into the player many think he can be under Poch.

If the Grealish thing is true then it’s quite amusing. I can’t deny that it’s a bold strategy to spend the majority of a transfer window in negotiations for a player that we are aiming not to sign by the end of the window.

Bit naive to think we've spent all our time on him, basing it on him being the only name we've been seriously linked to by the media.
Personally I just think thats just the way our ship is run nowadays, with very few leaks.

I don’t think that we’ve only spent time on him. I do think that this window has been quite strange, even in comparison to other strange windows we’ve had.

It's the old 4D chess - Levy and Pochettino have been moving their pieces all summer and all of a sudden the other clubs are down two bishops and a queen.

Oh come on... IF JG was our primary target in this transfer window, then we would have signed him by now/still will, low balling be damned. Not even Levy would refuse to pay the few extra Million if that was all that stood between us and Villa. We have signed other players for more that it would cost to get Jack, so again, no he is not or ever was our primary target this window.

Doesn't mean we might not pull out if we feel Villa are asking too much, but that will only be because we have better already, or better incoming.

I'm mostly happy that Herc is sounding more positive again, was starting to worry for the poor man.

Okay good on you for believing that, i don't. It smells of something else to me..... Im happy to miss out on him btw. I was underwhelmed from the outset.

In all seriousness, based on what the ITKs have said, and what Poch said previously and having signed the new deal, I do honestly believe that we will spend a lot of money over the next two weeks. We do always spend money. Whether we spend it well remains to be seen, but I do think we’ll be £100m or more down by the end of it.

We’ve spent more money on signings (ignoring net spend) each season since Poch arrived. £30m year one, £50m year two, £70m year 3 and £100m year four (approx). We will spend. My concern is that our leave it late approach will result in spending big on the wrong players (e.g. Sissoko).

FWIW: We'll have these new signings in 3 weeks earlier than we would have had them if the transfer window closure hadn't been moved forward. And we would have been delighted with that.

No wonder nothing has been done if Levy and Poch have spent the summer collecting porn(s) and moving their 'pieces'.

If Grealish counts towards the HG quota and he's relatively cheaper, it's very unlike Levy to miss this opportunity. So this info that there is another primary target is just a ruse to get Villa to sell cheap. It's so going to backfire. That's my guess.

I am not sure I understand why people think Trix's contact's opinion is a ruse to get Villa to blink on Grealish. If we wanted to put it out there that we are moving on from Grealish or eying other targets to try and force their hands there are better ways we'd do that.

Or in Daniel Levy's case a bald strategy

You mean that it's a bit too subtle and that the new villa owners might not make a habit out of going on SC ITK?

The transfer window has also moved for everyone else, so I don't really see how this is a development for us in terms of staying ahead of the pack.

Whether he is the right signing or not, your point (or at least how I understood it), was that DL and his cronnies saw Grealish as the main signing. The one that Poch wanted, and especially at the price they thought he could be had at.

Now yes, I am sure the price has moved, what with new Investors at Villa etc... and yes, I am sure there is a degree of brinksmanship going on, but to suggest we are being deliberately conniving and dropping interest in JG because we can't pull a fast one on Villa AND thus also hijack Poch's main target..?

I could understand it if it was Martial or Bale type money and we saw a cheeky way in and got found out, but this is Jack Grealish. So unless Villa have jacked the price up and beyond 50M+ then we aren't walking away from a suggested main target because of money. We would walk away for a secondary one in this manner though.

It to me was always clear we had much higher targets in mind all window and Grealish was/is an opportunity signing that ticked many boxes as an aside. It's also all tied up, bar... something. Whatever it is, it is in no way (for me, based on what I have come to understand) down to Daniel Levy only wanting a "so called Poch's main target" (as you inferred by questioning ther ITK) if DL can only pull a fast one.

Anyway, this probably belongs over in the JG thread in all honesty as it was yesterday's ITK IIRC and it's just my opinion vs yours, so all onions and so forth.

Perhaps if we could sign someone it would give us an inkling as to how the rest of the window might pan out. It would certainly give us all a lift.

Every window is strange. None stranger than the window where we signed Rasiak in complete desperation in the last knocking on deadline day.
