Tottenham are set for talks with Luke Amos over a new contract, Sky Sports News understands.

The youngster impressed on the club's pre-season tour of the USA, starting all three games against Barcelona, Roma and Milan

Initial discussions are understood to have been pencilled in for when the central midfielder and the squad return to England.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino also admitted Amos has the chance to start the first game of the season against Newcastle, with ongoing injuries to midfielders Victor Wanyama and Moussa Sissoko, and Mousa Dembele and Eric Dier yet to return to training following the World Cup.

The 21-year-old said he hopes to emulate the success of Chelsea's N'Golo Kante.

"I like to watch a lot of midfielders," Amos said. "As a child, I liked Xavi and [Andres] Iniesta, but now when I see how amazing Kante's been, I love to watch Kante and see all the plaudits he's getting.

"In the past, players [like him] didn't get that, so to see all the praise he's getting is really good. I love his all-round game - his energy, running, tackling, passing. He's taken the defensive midfield or box-to-box midfield role to a new level with his energy. If I can be anything like that, then I'll be a good player.

"I'm more a box-to-box, defensive-minded. I'm not a No.10. I'm not a tricky winger. I focus on running, passing, getting on the ball, making things happen, stopping things. They're things Kante does as well."

Amos - a product of the Spurs academy - signed a new deal until 2019 earlier this year before joining Stevenage on loan.

Tottenham have been searching for a long-term replacement for Dembele, whose contract runs out next summer, and will listen to offers for him before the transfer deadline on August 9 along with Toby Alderweireld and Danny Rose.

Anyone know what happened to Nathan Oduwa? I remember he was quite highly rated, had a great pre-seaon with us a couple of years ago, went on loan to Rangers and then vanished off the face of the earth!?

Oduwa did diddly squat at Ljubljana and is now a free agent.

Serious question what do French clubs do better than us ? I might be chatting shit but isn’t it through their national set up that they excel as opposed to individual clubs ? As in there’s not gonna be so much benefit for an English kid in their club set up ?

Just to add as a further example of my point, about the importance of development that the French league offer, this was the starting line-up for the u17 Euro final in 2014.
Woodman(Newcastle), Kenny (Everton), Moore (Arsenal), Ledson (Everton), Gomez (Charlton), Onomah (Tottenahm), Solanke (Chelsea), Brown (Chelsea) , Cook (Leeds), Moore (Lens) , Roberts (Fulham)

I'm going to make an educated guess but 2 the players with the most PL appearances are Gomez and Cook who both started out at Championship clubs. So despite the PL clubs having better coaching and better first team players to learn around, all that really matters is opportuntiy to develop and game time, and Gomez and Cook got that, and it's now why we are apparently considering paing 30m on Cook when we wouldn't need to if we had given our own player a chance.

Yup I’m sure it will really bring his game on as opposed to working with Poch and being around Harry Kane ?

Onomah at that age above was described as special by Poch, and under 3 years hasn't got anywhere. So what would Griffiths at 17 get from 3 years under Kane and Poch, when Griffiths isn't anywhere near Onomah's level relative to their positions.

Both examples should give some insight as to why players don't care about training under with PL clubs anymore as it won't help their career. Words are meaningless and coming back to our club, as it's what I know, Poch has been talking a lot over the years and people will believe what he says. He has now said that he is not afraid to play Amos at a time we are completely depleted of CMs as a sign of bravery and his belief in the academy and people would respond with 'see there is a Pathway or Poch does use the academy' 'I bet so an so will regret leaving'. And people will go back to questioning why anyone would ever leave the academy. The sad thing is I have lost all belief in these players getting chances, but seeing Onomah fit and still here, I still had some glimmer of hope his time will come strangely. I think they call it cognitive dissonance.

Saying all that I still expect Dembele and Dier to start the first game despite no preseason.

In addition to the original point. Chelsea tried to poach him from Charlton at the same time they took Palmer and Colkett 2 other quality players. Colkett and Palmer's game stepped up and they were 2 of the best players in their age group, however despite the improving as players thanks to the Chelsea academy and being surrounded by some World Class players they haven't got anywhere in their career, and are considered 'no loss' as no one knows what could have been. Gomez on the other hand rejected Chelsea and sacrificed the improve coaching and stayed at Charlton. He got opportunities when he was young and earned a move to Liverpool, and is highly rated. That is why ours and other clubs players are now leaving for opportunities.

Finally, look at Hudson-Odoi. He has just torn up a Premier League top 6 RB who is also the quickest in the league. He has been objectively Chelsea's best player in preseason, any sensible club would be giving him a chance. Everyone is currently raving about him, and yet, one of the best players in the league is still to come back in his position, which is Hazard. CHO could easily not get any chances, and then people would go on about him not being good enough. That could conceivably happen and is likely to happen and is an example of the situation we are in. Can people honestly look at both Sessegnon and Hudson-Odi and believe Sessegnon is the better winger? but Sessegnon got his chance in the Championship and people believe he's the best 17 year old around. Sessegnon, has great timing, composure, movement, decision making and is a strong runner. CHO's timing is not as good but is as quick, a better dirbbler a better finisher, a better passer, more creative, has great movement but at the end of next season could be in the same place as Loftus-Cheek for them. It so so frustrating to watch. Again demonstrates the difference between, coming through the EFL and the PL (Top 6), and shows how weak the saying 'not good enough' is, when top 6 clubs don't give chances

For us, we have now reached the point where we need top quality players to get us where we want to be/stay, which means less opportunity for risk (of playing young, unproven players). It’s the two quality players for every position thing.
I somewhat understand this, but still you can trust the best of the best and give minutes here and there.

Either way I wonder what the Spurs fans who used to insult the traditional big clubs for not giving academy players a chance, are saying now we are in the same position. Imagine it's a lot of back tracking going on.

George Hirst has signed for a Belgian club managed by Nigel Pearson. He didn’t look particularly good in the under 19 euros.

Hirst is a good striker, but I think he is too similar to Brereton which is why he probably looked poor. ONe should have been benched. I think Hirst and he could have come on later.

Talking of the Euros it is so infuriating that we are missing the next u20 World Cup. I know I have always gone about the age group.

But looking at Hudson-Odi, Smith-Rowe, Skipp, Nelson, Nketiah, Sancho, Foden all looking quality for their respective clubs and you think that's the tip of the iceberg with regards to the talent available in that age group. Would have been great to watch

Think the players bolded will be around the U21s next season Tbh but yeah we have some amazing players who aren’t able to defend our crown.

Of course they are the best attacking talents in the 00 age group. I've been going on about Hudson-Odoi for so long, trying to talk him up and show he is the same level as the other two, while trying to not talk down the other 2. Really pleased for CHO that he has looked so good in preseason and I'm optimistic for England.

I don't know how I feel once he started playing for Chelsea as he could tear it up for them.

Simpson really let the u19s down would have been great to see that age group defend the u20 World Cup and could probably do it without those 3

I think we have lost the most then.

Interestingly Ronaldo Vieira has gone to Sampdoria. I thought he was getting decent chances at Leeds, but still seems like a progressive move
With all these kids going abroad I’m excited to see how they progress.

If things go well I would mind seeing younger ages go to.
