I think Sanchez was Dier's CB replacement and Foyth was Wimmers replacement/long term prospect personally. Who the hell knows though.
I agree, hard to know. But Toby's contract issue actually started last spring and summer. So, I think Levy/Poch knew they were likely going to sell Toby this summer, and did not want to be in a position to have to sell and buy a replacement at the same time. £40+M is a lot to spend on Dier's spot as a 3rd CB.

Dier always starts and it's not a lot to pay for a starter. I think the idea was to stick with a back 3 last season but Toby and Wanyama's injury issues meant we weren't able to. Then something problematic regarding Toby's contract issue kicked off and that mixed with Sanchez and Son's form (he'd have been one to lose spot) meant we stuck with the four even when Toby came back. There's always been this clause hanging over heads but I don't buy theory we bought Sanchez as we knew we'd lose Toby this summer personally, I think we hoped Toby would sign up during season.

Have we been linked to any CB's other than Maguire this summer (per ITK I mean?). I don't think so... reason I'm asking is...are we going to splash TA's fee on direct replacement, or invest in another area... though to be fair- Davinson truly kept him out last year, injuries or not.

I'm for strengthening in other areas...CM cough cough

Its pretty obvious we signed sanchez and foyth for this scenario. Last summer we were all moaning we were signing 2 cbs when we had the best defence well here is the reason. Think we was only willing to add if we could get an exceptional talent i.e De Ligt.

I wasn't moaning at all last summer as I assumed we'd be playing a back 3. Toby, Sanchez and Jan as starters with Dier as DM and backup CB, Wanyama as backup DM and Foyth learning sounded about right. Wimmer had been sold too. If we'd been playing a back 4 I'd have thought it was weird though and I can see how suspect it looks now.

No, we signed Sanchez to make our 3ATB stronger, enabling Dier to play midfield and we then signed foyth to cover for the sale of Wimmer. We are weakening the team massively by selling Toby (and strengthening United hugely). If Dave or Jan get injured then Dier is 3rd choice. It's shit. Not getting martial in return makes it even worse. We're still a selling club as the sales of Walker and now Toby show. Even arsenal got mkhitaryan as part of the Sanchez deal. We just look weak.

There are many players better than Martial. Would any want to come to us or be available? Maybe not. Then don’t sell Toby without getting Martial. Sacrifice £35m so you don’t look like a bunch of mugs forever more, act like a big club, kind of like a United are behaving.

you moan about ST prices, and then expect the club to pay a player we don't want his wages each week just because United won't sell us a player.

Indeed - it isn't exactly like we are just giving him away!

A player who we want out, who has a 25m release clause next year and wouldn't be used by Poch if he stayed. There wasn't even a bidding war for him FFS. What do people want??

Sad he has to go. But it sends the message again. Cross Poch and you're finished. Good fee in all honesty.

Lets not butter it, walker and toby are big losses the last two years. We are still not at the top table, we are an ajax/monaco buy young cheap sell high.

We need to make sure this money goes to good use.

He must want us to fail?
No. But make no mistake about it. In Levy's eyes, its all about the money. If it werent, he would sell abroad for less. Instead, he sells Walker and Toby to rivals and strengthens them. We thought we've progressed past it but it is quite clear that we are still in the buy low/sell high no matter to who business.

Poch has interest in keeping Toby now?

Our summer's business was predicated on losing him, Dembélé and maybe Rose asap.

EDIT: I am convinced that the above is what "being brave" meant.

I don’t disagree but Pochettino hasn’t got what he wanted tho so it’s not the same. Chelsea flogged Matic with no fanfare

(And to be fair to Levy it was a terrible idea - Utd improved dramatically, Chelsea regressed)

He can't force the players to go abroad. Both of them were bent on the Mancs.
