One of the main limiting factors for the capacity was not the physical accommodation of seats, it was demonstrating that 60k+ people could be safely got in and out of the neighbourhood. That is also one of the main reasons for the multiple strategies to attract people to arrive early and tempt them to stay late: to stagger arrivals and departures, so the transport infrastructure can cope.
£4 pints will do a lot to help there! ?

It wouldn't be the first time we've had 60,000 in and out of the ground, we used to do it and we had no victoria line at the time.

Should be lots of pics today. The rich boys having a look round the west. Weirdly no kids allowed under 18 as apparently it’s still a building site. Sure the south was allowed kids seems a bit odd West is so behind when it had a 6 month head start.

Was a roll of a dice away from opening against the murderers though. Levy had Annika Rice on his Amstrad phone.

Health and safety, transport regulations etc weren't the same though back in the 60s.

Also, in those days, London had a fraction as many cars to clog up the roads and parking. And a large majority of fans lived locally and could either walk or take a short local bus ride. To put it another way, you didn't have 20,000 selfish fucks insisting on driving to N17 from Hertfordshire and Essex ;).

Speaking as a selfish fuck, there is much truth in what you say.:)

I wouldn't say 'selfish fucks', I am not getting any younger and from where I live I would have to get a train into central London and then out again to NWHL. If the day comes when I cannot go and watch the team (that I have watched virtually every home game of for the last 55 years) by car, it will be when I will call it a day and watch on TV or a stream.

I’ve been following the thread for the last 2 year and really appreciate the updates from everyone. Visited the new executive seats in the west stand, got a few photos so thought I’d share!

I have absolutely no problem with you driving to Tottenham as long as you don’t park in my space!

I’m thinking with the new parking zones I’ll need to get to NWHL about 2hrs before ko to have any chance of a decent space within a 25min walk of the ground...

Changing midweek kick off times to 7pm instead of 8pm would help.

Not to mention food you'd want to eat.

It wouldn't be the first time we've had 60,000 in and out of the ground, we used to do it and we had no victoria line at the time.

In addition to below, did we have so many later kick offs in those pre-premier league days? I bet we were predominantly playing 3pm Saturday meaning not everyone bolted home as soon as the match finished. Tottenham probably wasn't such a shit hole back then either, so people probably did linger.

According to my dad, uncle and grandad, the norm for them was to get coach trips which included match tickets and there were loads of them back then ferrying fans in from the surrounding areas.
Without the masses of cars everywhere, I should imagine those coaches ingress and egress was fairly swift.

Maybe but Wembley draws a lot of tourists because it's the famous national stadium so it's easier to sell tickets to non fans[/QUOTE

The ticket prices were attractive and tickets were a lot easier to get than they will be st the NWHL

I think it'd be the opposite of a help! Lots of people don't finish work till half five or so and would all be rushing to the stadium simultaneously.

There's always gonna be people that find it hard.
You can't please everyone, you can only do the overall best.
8pm is too late for the majority of fans to even contemplate hanging around after a match, which is why most football stadiums, even outside of London, see swathes of people leaving before the match has even ended. At WHL and Wembley, there are hundreds of people literally running to the station to beat the crowds. This in itself is dangerous, little kids and the older, less firm fans, can get shoved out of the way (I've seen it happen)

For the proportion of fans that can't get to the match if they finish work on time there are options.
Change your hours that day
Take holiday
Don't go the match
