He’s not trying to say anything. He’s saying it.

What Pochettino is saying is simple, basic common sense.

5 years ago we had a plan, basically constructed around building and moving into a new stadium while at the same time improving the results on the pitch so that we became seriously competitive at the highest level.

We’ve achieved that in spades. The original plan has become redundant and now we need a new one.. This is obviously correct, uncontroversial and totally normal.

Yet because we’re all so deeply emotionally involved, we’re reading all sorts of things into it.

It’s a neutral, common sense statement. He’s said it’s not about spending more or less money. He’s said he needs to listen to Levy. It’s about agreeing a plan with clear, realistic and shared objectives and targets for the second 5 years of his management career at Spurs, which, obviously and correctly it would be stupid not to have.

The one thing it’s very evidently not is a veiled message to force Levy to cough up more dough. The budget will be an important part of the discussion but as a Pochettino himself said, it’s not about spending more or less money. It’s about being clear what you’re aiming for now that you’ve completed the first set of objectives.

It’s basically about knowing exactly what his job for the next phase is now that he’s completed the first task he was given. That isn’t a threat or a clandestine plea for more money. It’s more important, more sensible and more constructive than that.

The thing that did me was after the game he was asked if he will leave if we win. He said maybe if we lose too.

100%. I'm not even sure if the club has a set one to be honest, I think they have a rough idea but take each player on a case by case basis.

My point is simply that we have had such a huge revenue growth in the last two years that there simply HAS to be money there to be spent on transfers and wages, should the club wish to use it. Not enough to make the Mancs jealous but certainly enough to compete with the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea, and certainly enough to allow us to be (even) more competitive.

Your faith in Levy will dictate the rest I guess. This is where we diverge!

I will argue the point about us not using the increased revenue however, Kane's huge new deal and Poch's £8m a year deal in the summer were hugely significant and extremely competitive, and certainly a huge step up from our old capabilities.

Lloris, Son, Dele, Lamela and Sanchez all got decent rises too. Wages are arguably even more important than transfer spend in being competitive.

I like levy. But i think he is concentrating on getting the debt for the stadium down rather than investing in players.

Hope poch changes his mind.

I suppose you look at it from business viewpoint. This season will see spurs earn an additional 100m from the champions league. Thats alot to make up the year you dont get into top 4.

Could be right, as you've said no one knows.

Personally I think we front-loaded the stadium austerity years and this summer is where we make the step up. I do think closing the stadium project ended up taking over last year and it almost cost us on the pitch. I think Levy was keen to rectify in Jan and Poch made a stand.

I imagine the only focus on the stadium front right now is to maximise revenue streams from it, naming rights being the key one. I don't think we are in a rush to clear that debt, Levy said 'payback is long-term' in his interviews ahead of the stadium opener..

There is so much talk floating around at the moment from the fans and this forum to what is being deduced from Poch's quotes surrounding rebuilding the squad.

The talk is about spending the money to bring in the players we require.

Bit IIRC last season we were in the market but a big stumbling block was clearing out some of the players we already have on our books, and this was proving difficult.

Now I am the last person who should tell Levy how to run the club but surely some lessons should be learnt from last season.

I feel that knowing Levy he was holding out for perceived values on these players and no club was willing to match these valuations.

Another season has passed, contracts have shortened in length so the value of these players has obviously declined.

We are nowhere further forward and out asset value has declined.

Surely we should just get rid of the players for whatever we can. Take a hit if need be. The long term effect will only be positive, freeing up space and allowing the purchase of whoever's Poch needs.

That or stick to our guns and have these assets devalue again over the next 12 months, and fall far below what they were worth 12 months ago.

at least Mina Raiola has received a 3 month ban, shame it's not for 33yrs. this might mean his clients that want to move this season will join somewhere else

Timed to perfection too as you quite rightly say...banned during the whole of the transfer window. I detest this man and everything he stands for in the game.

How much has the new stadium changed things? Yes, repaying the cost of the stadium is long-term but if the debt is say 600M and is going to be repaid over 20 years that is 30M pa plus interest, say 40M. I don't know of course, maybe Levy is looking at 10 years or 30. But assuming my plucked out of my rear figures are correct (and hugely simplifying), the question then would be how much net additional revenue do we expect to get from the new stadium - match day income, NFL, other events, naming rights etc.. (completely ignoring the rest of the development)? If it's 60M, then we have increased net revenue by 20M pa.

My hypotheticals/guesses could be way off. But that's roughly how i think Levy is looking at it for the purposes of his next 5 or 10 year plan. And he's conservative, he's not going to assume that we get to the CL final every year. Leaving aside cash flow (which i think is manageable using debt if needs be), wages, transfer fees, agent fees are all cost, which is then budgeted to be paid over the life of the player contract.

I personally think we will see some 'player spending' increases in the coming years. Just maybe not as much as we all hope for. The bottom line remains that Levy and Poch will talk about the next 5 year plan this summer. Poch wants a plan that sees us realistically able to sustainably compete for titles and CLs over that kind of period, not as a one-off and not necessarily next year.

This. Nail on head; it’s not necessarily about spending £85 mil on a player, it’s about trusting Pochettino’s choices in the market, paying what’s needed to acquire those targets, and accepting that squeezing every last penny out of a deal, to the point of negligent brinkmanship, is not indicative of the behaviour of a ‘big club’ that has a winning mentality.

Exactly....I'd rather see the club spend £40m on a player originally valued at £25m - £30m if it's somebody Poch really wants and thinks will slot into the side seamlessly.

Sissoko says hello
Have we any evidence Sissoko was a Poch choice? I only ask this as, at the time, it felt very much like a last minute, panic buy, and not a planned target; I also think the way that he was initially used, compared to his role now, seems to suggest this also.

While I love Poch and I hope and think Levy will back him this summer, I really wish Poch would stop his cryptic bullshit in the media. He is just feeding their thirst and making people question his commitment to the club.

The only way players are coming is if player are going. We know this. It's not even about the net spend anymore, it's about the 25 man squad.

If you want new faces we need to get rid of some.

My hitlist would include:

Lamela
Dier
Wanyama
Davies
Vorm

Potential windfall if Eriksen and Tobes go.

7 spaces. A decent amount of cash. Add in CL money, new Stadium money, Wembley increased income we didnt spend money and we should have a spend up for sure.

BUT Levy might have to cut losses on some players if we want that squad space.

Incidentally, how much do you guys think is enough for 'Levy to back Poch' in the transfer market?

There are many calls for Levy to make funds available, but how much are we talking here?

Your standard 'good' player, or very promising youngster goes for around £50m these days.

Very good, established PL players in their prime go around for £60m to £80m.

Superstars are £80m+(the sky's the limit tbh).

If we're looking to bring in 4 'good' players, that may well be £200m.

I'm not saying this won't happen; my valuations are approximates and we have to consider player sales as well.

Just genuinely interested in what you guys think the transfer budget will be and whether that will be enough in the modern football world.
