People moaning about the price need to consider the fact that all teams knew we wanted to get rid. The reason the likes of Maguire, and Zaha are being touted for extortionate fees is because their own clubs don't want to/don't have to sell. It's also the reason someone like Delph goes for 8 - 10m. City have put him on the proverbial 'transfer list' so you can't manufacture a fake market for him or the likes of Trippier if you're the one doing the flogging.

I think it’s also a case of getting him off wage bill too to make space for new people or possible pay rises.

We run a tight ship!

I wonder how much we would have got for him if we had sold him straight after the WC?

I did think last summer it would have been ideal time to cash in for maximum profit, although hindsight is a great thing and if we’d then struggled all season at right back even without him fans would have been jumping on bandwagon of how we’d sold England’s world cup right back etc lol.

Credit to him for going to a different league. Not enough English players give it a go.

I think he has been very good for us. A couple of high profile gaffs and a couple of games where he didn't look like he was trying at all (in champions league too) shouldn't take away from his overall positive contribution too much.

Tottenham unlikely to sign Kieran Trippier replacement as £20m departure sparks internal battle

Tottenham are unlikely to sign a replacement for right-back Kieran Trippier, who is close to completing a £20million move to Atletico Madrid.

With the rest of the squad departing for Singapore for the start of Spurs' pre-season tour this afternoon, Trippier has travelled to the Spanish capital to sign for Atleti, ending his four-year stay in London.

The 28-year-old has been Spurs' first choice right-back since the sale of Kyle Walker to Manchester City two years ago, and he made 38 appearances in all competitions last season, including starting the Champions League Final defeat to Liverpool.

Spurs are also open to offers for Serge Aurier, their other senior right-back, but the Ivorian is expected to stay and compete for a starting place with Kyle Walker-Peters and Juan Foyth.

Walker-Peters, 22, has made just nine starts in the previous two seasons but Spurs turned down approaches from Crystal Palace and German club RB Leipzig this summer and boss Mauricio Pochettino wants him to challenge to be first-choice right-back this season.

Spurs admire Norwich's Max Aarons but do not see value in the Canaries' asking price of more than £20m for the 19-year-old and they are not planning, as it stands, to sign another right-back unless a suitable player becomes available later in the window.

Foyth was moved from centre-half to full-back by Pochettino towards the end of last season and is also expected to be given the chance to nail down Trippier's spot. The young Argentine played right-back at the Copa America this summer, as his country reached the semi-final.

For me he’s a more technical right back than an athletic hustle-bustle type and reckon he has a good shot of doing well out there with his delivery and technique, so long as he gets rid of the injury problems that have been hampering him of late.

I think I summed it up perfectly when I said last year, Trippier is basically a David Bentley playing at RB. That's not derogatory, it's just what he is as a player, his technical ability and his physical limitations.

If we're seriously heading into the new season with Aurier, Foyth and Walker-Peters as our sole right back options, that's incredibly disappointing. Full backs are so important in the modern game, and in our system. I'll be glad to see KWP get some minutes, but I really expected us to buy a top-notch replacement for Trips or at least someone with pace and potential.

Good luck to him - hope he does well but also delighted I'll never have to see him in a Spurs shirt again.

Things could have gone so differently, had a very good WC tournament and I fully expected him to just do a good job last season, no major issues just carry on the way he was the season before the during the WC, the odd mistake but generally a solid and reliable RB.

Last season though was not an enjoyable watch for anyone, I felt for him at times as he was clearly out of his depth in some games. Happy for him to go but hope he has a good season in La Liga.

If we go into next season selling Tripps and not getting another Rb we will have another top 4 finish but it will be a battle IMO

Sticking my neck out but I'm absolute certain we won't sign a RB now:

Serge Aurier, Davinson Sanchez and Victor Wanyama will return to Enfield to start pre-season training next week following commitments with their national teams at summer tournaments.

Sanchez was knocked out before Foyth yet Foyth is on tour, probably because he needs work to transition to RB.

Fuck me. With Aurier's injury record we're basically planning to go into the season relying on KWP and Foyth at RB.

If that really is the case, I would rather we kept Trippier.

Really? So you don't trust the managers judgement? I'm sure out of 3 players one of them will be able to find consistency. KWP is 22 ffs we have to give him a chance at some point or what is the point in keeping him?

I'm glad Poch is showing belief in these players rather than taking a gamble on another player that might not actually improve us.

How would keeping him have made us any better?
Exactly this. Foyth makes us more secure at the back. Perhaps the possible 433 Poch plans on using relies on 5 offensive players (1 CF, 2 WF, 2 AM) with additional width from fullbacks when possible.

I don’t even know what the fuck I’m thinking anymore

Yes really. Foyth is never going to be a good RB. He lacks the agility and pace to ever be anything but a CB playing out of position.

KWP is a still a relative unknown at this point, but from what I've seen, he hasn't developed physically in the way a lot of us would have hoped. He looked slow and weak when he played at RB next season. The contrast with the likes of TAA and AWB, who are both a couple of years younger, is stark.

We need a new RB if we're selling Trippier.

I think his options are slim and limited, hence Spain. I suspect he would have prefered a move to an english club..
