The reality is, we have never been able to pull of a star signing like this and won’t until a few seasons. We do not buy the finished article. Just because we signed VdV, doesn’t mean we bucked the trend.

United, a club who many laugh and scoff at are still able to attract a star like Dybala. It speaks volumes. Many of us got our hopes up after the CL final and thought we would go out and do a Lpool and sign 2/3 stars for their team.

It’s looking really unlikely now that this will happen.

Pepe and Dybala going to the teams below us is not cool at all, I totally agree.

I still think we'll be better than them if we keep Eriksen and Rose and bring in GLC however. We'll be better next year and Ndombele is gonna be a beast. We have a rested squad full of quality, we're back home, and we have a top manager.

Still need Levy to deliver though.

Yeah I’m not saying it’s all doom and gloom, but the thought of trying to close the gap to the top and cementing our position seems way off. We’ll be in for another dog fight for top four imo.

Apparently Champions League football is not as important to star players as we thought it was. Ceballos/Pepe/(Tierney?) to Arsenal, AWB/Dybala/(Maguire?)/(Fernandes?) to United. It's all about the money.

If Eriksen is gone (which looks like the most likely outcome) a swap deal for Dybala would've been our best move IMO.
Possibly fernandes now becomes available and a free run at him? He is more your Eriksen mould player

A club that genuinely wants to challenge for the Champions League and Premier League sees this opportunity and snatches it. Dybala (and at a reasonable price) is a player that can win you the league. Levy doesn’t do these deals.

With a near 0 net spend in 10 years, 4 consecutive years of CL football, big money sponsorship deals, and it still feels like we’re doing the bare minimum... if that.

CL to players don't mean shit.

Money does. End of.
When we lost out to players 5 years ago it was because we weren’t a perennial CL team.
Today it’s because we can’t spend the money even though we’ve posted record profits and recently signed a massive new sponsorship deal.

Doesn’t ever seem to change, does it? Always the almost.

That’s the problem though. Far too up in the air for my liking and the fact the window stays open for other European clubs after our one shuts worries me.

We can't force a club to bid for him before the PL window closes and we can't force him to sign a new deal either. It's a shitty situation. The only play is to set a deadline where our contract offer expires, and then proactively replace him.

As for your later post about scrapping for top 4, I'm a bit more optimistic than that. We were streets ahead of the others in 3rd before tiredness and injury caught up with us. I'm optimistic at where we can go this season with a fresh Kane and the addition of Ndombele.

RB is a bit of a worry, but would you swap our whole defensive unit for any out of Arse, Chelsea or Utd? Not for me.

Said this since the news broke. If we get Ndombele, GLC and Sess, and Eriksen stays on a new contract then we’ve had a fucking good window and go into the season with the best midfield I’ve ever seen at Tottenham

Oh I don’t know about that. Modric Sandro (pre injury) VDV and Bale were pretty hot. But not the thread for it, I apologize.

Mate, we can’t compete with Man Utd’s wage structure. That’s the issue.

Rashford on £350k per week, Sanchez on £500k per week, Pogba, fuck knows what he’s on?

All the time The Equaliser is in charge of contract negotiations not many teams will get a look in with these type of players. He will pay these players anything to get them in the door

Plus it’s an easy transfer for both teams, Juve want one of their players, they don’t want any of ours

Frustrating to see Ousmane Dembélé linked with Liverpool..

If he is actually available, I’d by far prefer us to sign an attacker with that type of profile than Dybala, particularly if we’re able to sign Lo Celso for midfield.

Again, wages/fee would probably put us out of the running, sadly.

An off season largely due to being played out of position to accommodate Ronaldo.

This consistency speaks for itself, and bare in mind stats only tell half the story.

The thing I like about this however is that when Utd were the bollocks, the majority of their best signings were the lesser known/higher potential ones, supplemented with top quality youth. Ronaldo was just a teenager from Sporting that only Champ Manager players had heard of (I actually think Quaresma was the better prospect in game lol!).

They've actually gone backwards since spending mental sums of money on the likes of Pogba, Mata, Sanchez, Di Maria, Lukaku, Ibra, etc...

That lot down the road have now spent £170m on strikers in 3 years and still have Mustafi at CB.

Herc is in the ITK thread saying he still expects GLC and Sessegnon to come in. I think that would qualify as a 'Liverpool style' window. It'd certainly be a step up in quality for us IMO. Wouldn't surprise me if GLC outshone Dybala if we got him either.
