That was terrible and it encapsulated huge issues with our performances for a long time, we have papered over the cracks but we've really fucked it here.

We haven't fixed the Dembele problem, We've got Ndombele but we shouldn't have a dependency on 1 player to create the space so that we can pass, you can argue all you want about whether Eriksen would make a difference but he wasn't able to coming off the bench.

Winks and Sissoko were diabolical, it was slow, sideways and all round awful they were the catalyst for our poor game and why we never stretched the newcastle defence as they could easily get back into shape.

Sanchez being out of position yet again for a goal has made Poch look extremely foolish to be leaving a player as good as Vertongthen on the bench.

The penalty was a penalty but it would have got us out of jail big time, I'd say we deserve to be there at the moment, we have a lot of problems.

No. We needed creativity to break them down and used a unit that has only ever played well as a defensive wrecker in a key position. It was rubbish from Poch and Sissoko is a bad player in the opposition half.

And speak to me when we win with those tactics and that excuse for a footballer playing up top. It wont happen.

Another worrying thing about todays formation was the fact we started with Kane, Son, Lucas and Lamela.

All 4 of the attacking players in the squad, so we had no option on the bench to freshen it up.

Lack of squad depth is a worry right now especially if Eriksen goes.

A ridiculous state to be in immediately after a Champions League final appearance and a transfer window :grumpy:

I agree with you in general, but today isn't the day to call him out on it. He created more chances and better chances than any of the other players whose job is to create chances.

He went to a bunch of our games late last season as well.

He did work for someone else back then. Or he's just bored? I think he lives in London so maybe he just wants to watch some frustrating turgid football of his own brand.

I’m hoping this is just an early season thing and we’re just rusty ??

I didn’t think we could play worse than we did in the CL Final - today proved me wrong!

The sideways passing and lack of first time passing was very frustrating to watch but to call for Poch’s head is absolutely bonkers.

It's because we play the wrong formations; 4-2-3-1 and 4-1-2-1-2 don't win titles. 4-3-3 absolutely does. The more players you have higher up the pitch, the easier it is to break teams down, especially at the start of matches when they're fresh.

You need: wingers sitting high out on the wings who are willing to make runs in behind the defence (sane, mane, Salah, sterling). Fullbacks making overlapping runs (Robertson, TAA, walker, zinchenko). Midfielders putting balls through to these players early (de Bruyne, Silva, Silva, Gundogan). A competent DM both defensively and offensively (rodri, Fabinho, Fernandinho). Defenders and GKs who are comfortable playing the ball out to the fullbacks first time.

Width, speed of foot, speed of passing, lots of players in and around the box constantly moving, creative intelligence, defensive nous. How much of that is visible in our team and playing style at the moment? Maybe the defenders (not the keeper) being comfortable with playing the ball out...? We're so far off the top two still if you look at the things that they do to break their opposition down.

We effectively played 4 3 3. And that’s what’s killing it for me. City and Pools forwards complement each other but ours seem to just compete for the same space and most importantly cramp Kane for space and force him into other areas of the pitch. If Son and Moura stay wider, fine. But I don’t think they would be best in those positions.
At the minute the pieces don’t fit.
As I say we’re seemingly picking our best individuals and just chucking them onto the pitch.

The other big thing here of course, is we can all argue formations and what would be best, But that means we don’t have a set style of play after 5 years of Poch.
Ask and Pool, City, even Utd fan now, and then tell you, best formation and best players for it.
At Spurs, who knows how the prices fit, where should Moura, Son, Lo Celso play.
One, two, three up top? One holding, double pivot. Shakes head, who knows.

Poch doesn’t!

I dislike mike dean as much as any spurs fan but this was down to Poch

I agree. My post was tongue in cheek although I think Mike Dean should have made an attempt to have a look at the VAR screen for that potential penalty decision.

Not going to argue. But we'll win fuck all with him in our team. Would Liverpuddle or Man City play him in their first 11? And would the play him anywhere but in front of the 2 CB's?

It is these days even playing chess is more exciting and the pieces move faster than our team.
Football fans are fickle.

Their forwards work twice as hard as ours. Their juice is obviously better. ?

I honestly think Vertonghen is our best left back and Dier our best right back. They don't do silly mistakes and know how to put a cross in.

Thing is we can sit and bitch about a missed penalty, which it was but the fact that we are moaning about it means we are clutching at straws alittle. We should be making these kind of teams our bread and butter, but we are crying over a missed pen. VAR will give and take away, without it we were not Cleague Finalists and we lose at City last game. Should VAR have given it, yeah it should, but should it have been the difference between us losing to Newcastle and getting a point? no..we should be winning these games end of.
VAR shouldn't even have been needed for the foul on Kane, because it was so "clear and obvious" without the benefit of a replay. If Deane somehow couldn't see the contact from his view, the linesman certainly could have.
VAR should have been used for the Son appeal, because there is no way Deane could have been certain there was no contact with the player before the ball (because there was!).

It’s ridiculous a club our size has no striker to bring on from the bench. Utterly stupendous

We knew Llorente was a short term solution when we bought him so how have our scouts not identified a striker in 2/3 seasons? Someone young to come in like Jesus at City.

Ok we might not find a Jesus but surely we could find someone who can offer us a different option in games like this.
