Always baffles me how despised we are across the land. In a world dominated by oligarchs and crown princes, you'd think we'd be respected for the organic way we've built the squad over years of meticulous growth. Giving some hope to these forsaken football fools.
I think it's because we've built it organically. We've done what they've failed to do - run the business tightly and worked on infrastructure and now we're seeking to reap the benefits of doing that. Whereas most non-oligarch clubs were seduced by the unbelievable amounts of new money that's been pumped into the game and went on spending sprees (relative to their size), we've kept a very tight ship.

Whether one agrees with the approach or not, there have been tangible benefits associated with it in the eyes of outsiders - the stadium, the training complex as well as intangible ones - CL football, contending (albeit briefly) for titles and a CL final. These things breed envy and because they can't be dismissed as simply 'winning the lottery', it then crystallises into resentment.

Ask any of those people who have "hated [us] as an organisation for many years." why they hate us and they'd struggle to give a truly cogent answer. It'll be vague things like, 'oh, they think they're better than they are', or 'they're arrogant' (which are actually the same things) or one of a hundred ephemeral things that no-one can really point a finger at.

It all boils down to a 'what, you think you're better than me???' type situation - a sense of inadequacy makes them resentful.

EDIT: Having continued to read the rest of thread after replying, I see I've essentially echoed @jackson and @KikoSpurs excellent points.

I fucking hate Coventry

Years ago (around 2009 I think) I was having a Friday night post-work drinks in a rather posh hotel bar in Chiswick. I was at the bar with a friend and noticed lots of guys in light blue tracksuits. After asking a friend, it was confirmed that it was the Coventry City first team. They were playing QPR next day I think. I said that I hated Coventry because of the '87 Cup final because I went with my Dad (I was only a kid) and cried all the way home after we lost. I suddenly heard a voice behind me say that he was sorry about that and could he buy me a drink to make up for it. It was Chris Coleman, the manager at the time. Lovely bloke.

But yeah, I still hate Coventry, there's not enough booze in the world that can make up for that!

Was listening to TalkSPORT this morning and Laura Woods (Gooner) stated how she had to block a load of spurs fans because of the comments on her Twitter last night after Arsenal lost, she then came back with the age old retort of come back when you’ve won something. Now two things about this, until we do actually win something then we will always have to put up with that comeback for which there is very little room for manoeuvre and two just how sad do you have to be to take the time to post messages on a fit birds twitter account after her team has lost?

I think that we've been perceived as on the cusp of something big for quite a while, and each time there's a lot of fans that get a bit too over excited about it.......and forget that being on the cusp is not the same as lifting a cup!

My Leicester supporting mate says this dates back to the league cup final win.

A lot of other teams, I guess, have seen us go from a mid table side to leaving them behind and challenging at the top or threatening their place at the top and they don't like it, especially as they can't write it off as a lottery win like City/Chelsea.
Nah we were just as disliked on the 90's.

Because we were the only ones who didn't want them to win it for ages I think.

But that's reason to laugh at us, not to hate us.

I mean, if your team hasn't won the league since the 60s isn't it understandable that you might get overexcited at the merest sign of potential success?

You might think people would see us as the underdog. And if we were to finally do it that would be an incredible achievement. Like Leicester (albeit not quite as unexpected).

But no. People flat out hate us. If we win the league there won't be documentaries about us, like the Liverpool one, which paints a period of hurt. Liverpool suffered (apparently) for 30 years. We'll be 60 at least!

As I say, it means nothing to me if people hate - I don't care at all, and we shouldn't - but it is bemusing!

this thread is weirder than a hastily organised press conference at a lawncare company.

Where Robbie Savage got Edinburgh sent off for nothing.

I find hating teams because of lost finals so weird. It's like if we would start hating Coventry or Blackburn.

I think it's because of the booing we gave savage in all subsequent matches. Still stupid though

Yeah and probably the 70's although from what I recall of that period everyone was kicking the fuck out of everyone else, so probably didn't seem such an issue.

well in the 60's we beat them to do the double, in the 82 semis we beat them, and to cap it off we beat them in the league cup 99. i think they were close to winning a title in the 60's too, but lost to us made them miss out

Mourinho's second season isn't myth after all

Kane is a legend. This is Shearer type of levels

With Jose they'll always grind wins

Sp**s are absolutely dogsh*t. Have had the easiest fixture list so far as well

Sp**s have looked crap going forward for close to a handful of games now. Against teams low down the table too (Brighton, Burnley etc).

Despite having easy fixture i think Sp**s will do well they'll grind wins with Jose didn't outplay Burnley Brighton and Westbrom but they got wins they'll get found out when the difficult fixture comes

Sp**s would normally drop points here. Under Mourinho they simply look more solid.

Yep different mentality now, which is the main plus you get with Mourinho as your manager he's very big on the psychological stuff, he knows what it takes to be a champion and he'll try to rub it off on his team.

Shut up, they've been absolutely bang average this season.
Just grinding away. You want them to play like Brazil before giving them any credit?

Kane and Son are creating and scoring every game.

So depressing.

The hard fixtures start next for them. Would be surprised if they're above Arsenal come January 1.

Liverpool favourites for me still but that's assuming they can successful cope with the Van Dijk injury, I mean they're doing alright, it's a big test today tho, it's a different sort of prospect their defence has to deal with. You look at Sp**s with their attacking trio and their ability to grind out results, Chelsea coming into form. Perhaps we will get a tight title race this season. Hopefully within the next 5 years we could be involved!

Not buying any Sp**s hype, that was their easiest fixture until their at home to Fulham at the end of December, after the international break they've got a very hard run.
Jose will need to rotate his squad quite a lot and he hates doing that

To be honest, I think the easy fixture list criticism is fair enough. Apart from UTD away we’ve not really
played anyone that decent but having said that you can only beat what’s in front of you (Newcastle, Everton and West Ham aside)

City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and Leicester all in a row is exciting, though. If we can get 3 wins and a draw out of those 5 (optimistic I know) but that would shut the fuckers up and, dare I say it, we’d be in with a sneaky shout of being in the mix.

Most of that is fair comment. We have had an easy run of games albeit in the middle of a train wreck of fixtures, but we've ground out some ugly points. Will be interesting to see how we handle some tougher fixtures when opponents come at us instead of battening down the hatches though. Hopefully it will give us a bit of freedom to play the stuff Mourinho likes.

If they like you you're not threatening them.

We've actually got them worried this year haven't we.

I do wonder if it's how big a club we are that upsets other fans, let's be honest we haven't won anything truly glorious for thirty years yet we can still pull in crowds of 90,000 and at a neutral ground as well quite apart from selling out 60,000 week in week out.

I think people are underestimating our result at Southampton, they are doing really well this year and have taken points off Chelsea, Everton, and Villa, all of whom seem to be doing well too.
