Someone on FTL posted that the News Of The World is reporting that JD has signed a new contract. Doesn't say who with .

Can't find anything on their web site.

The England and Tottenham striker will double his money with a five-year contract worth a basic £40,000-a-week. And that will be boosted by bonuses basecd on appearances, goals and trophies.
It's a dramatic U-turn by the Spurs star, who has just 18 months left to run on his current contract.
West Ham, Aston Villa and Portsmouth were all keen to sign him — but Defoe has decided to stay put, even though he is well down the pecking order at White Hart Lane.

As long as he knows the deal and dosent cause us more problems in later transfer windows when he's not starting games.

These are the links from my list to date in this window:

Manchester City boss Sven Goran Eriksson is ready to offer £12 million for Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe. (Daily Express October 9).
Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp is poised to swoop for Liverpool striker Peter Crouch and Spurs forward Jermain Defoe as he looks to strengthen his attacking options. (Observer December 23)
Jermain Defoe is close to agreeing a new five-year deal at Tottenham that will double his current wages (News of the World January 6).

The reason I'm posting them is that there is a big ITK thread on FTL saying Defoe is on the way out. pablo is saying that Wendy doesn't rate him but BEN says the problem is the board and Ramos is doing their dirty work.

Either way, I thought it was worth bumping this back up to the front page as it looks like it could carry on a while.

I would trust BEN over Pablo ('Look, I was first with the news of Jamie Redknapp') any day.

According to Pablo, the Bale deal wasn't happening. Next day we signed Bale.

Look's like he is as The current Bun is running the full back page on that story and this is what Reuters are reporting (see below)

LONDON, Jan 8 (Reuters) - England striker Jermain Defoe wants to remain at Tottenham Hotspur despite being told by manager Juande Ramos he can quit the English Premier League club.
"The manager has said I can leave if I want but I want to prove him wrong," Defoe told the Sun newspaper on Tuesday. "I want to stay here.
"He (Ramos) just said, 'You can leave if you want to'. Yet I have no intentions of leaving this club because I love it here."
The 25-year-old Defoe, one of four top strikers at Spurs including Robbie Keane, Dimitar Berbatov and Darren Bent, has been unable to claim a regular place in the starting lineup in the last year and a half.
The former West Ham United forward said he could not sign a new, long-term contract with the club unless Ramos started playing him regularly.
"How can I be expected to stay for the next few years if I am going to be on the bench all the time?", said Defoe.
"I don't think any player would accept that."

Looks like it's Catch-22. And, as BEN suggested, the board is using Ramos in the same way they used Jol.

If he wants to stay so bad why doesn't he just sign a contract already?

There are many different reasons why this Defoe issue is still going on and most of them can be found in the transfers forum.

They range from ....
Not being happy with Jol.
Changing agents.
The board using Ramos to do their dirty work like they did with Jol before.
Not getting starts then finally getting more time due to Bent being off form and injured and he finally scores a few.
No real big offers coming in for him as alleged in the press from any big clubs.

He says he wants to stay but won't commit and quite clearly is worried about the amount of chances he will get to play, which isn't that stupid really as he is down the pecking order now.

Oh and there is another big story today in the Graniaud linking him to Villa for more than 7 mill we paid!

Not a good look. I really hope Defoe stays for he does offer us something up front. Is Levy trying to play good guy / bad guy through Ramos? There is something not quite kosher about this story. We must be the most amateur club in the EPL when it comes to public relation / the media.

If he has been told this, then it begs the questions what will happen if Berbatov goes as well, either this window or in the summer? Are we to be left with just Keane and Bent.............or has JR got something going on that we are being kept in the dark about.....like we have found a couple of 'New' Berbatovs for instance?
