Well that could be nice having two promising full backs on each side that makes it harder for the opponent to defend against.

Think it could also allow a 5 at the back if needed:

--------------------Lloris----------------------
----------Sanchez--Romero--Dier------------
--Emerson--Hojbjerg-Lo Celso----Reguilon--
-----Lucas/Gil-------Kane----Son--------------

"Good morning Emerson! How was your flight? Any aches and pains?"

"Nao"

"You'll do. Pass."

I presume it was a BUPA style medical in Barcelona by a private health company to look for any obvious red flags (heart condition, hernia, etc.) and he'll complete the minor aspects of it at the training ground later.

I'm excited as its a new player but i know nothing of him and having watched the old YouTube comp i am still none the wiser. Looks like he can bundle past players rather than go past them and doesnt look all that more impressive than Aurier to be honest. He is younger though so maybe that is the idea. Fingers crossed he's a good addition.

Seems like a Wan Bissaka type? Tall (for a FB), solid defensively and attacking-wise but not elite, however young and plenty of time to continue to develop? I think thats exactly what we need, particularly if we land Traore. If we continue to play 4-3-3 not sure we can go all out attack from FB, even if our forwards go narrow at times. Balance. That's how we've won our opening games.

Just had a quick look on the Barca and Betis forums to see their thoughts on him.

Barca reactions were quite mixed. I think a lot of them have been spoiled from the Guardiola era and expect technical perfection from all players at all times. Some really wish they'd kept Emerson and felt they should've given him a chance, while others seem to be calling him shit based off one match. I get the impression many of them hadn't actually seen much of him at all.

The Betis forum - the club where he actually played for 3 years - was a stark contrast. Quite a few posters were saying he was the best RB they'd ever seen at Betis and pretty much every single post wished him well upon signing for Barca and spoke very highly of him.

Promising stuff, all in all.

From watching YouTube comps and reading Barca forums - my take on it is - right idea, wrong player.

If we're not going to replace Eriksen and insist upon a Dele, Skipp, Hojbjerg midfield then having a proper attacking threat from full-back is essential. However from what I saw/read there are serious concerns about his level of technical ability, which if those concerns turn out to be valid then he will ultimately be a very limited player for us that we will try to upgrade in two years time but struggle to get him off the wage bill.

Maybe the Betis forums were a better place to look...

just going off stats https://fbref.com/en/players/df8b52a5/Emerson and from a few vids he certainly seems to be a very defensively solid player overall and puts in a lot of tackles and blocks. I do like to see an attacking right back but the main job is to defend and defend well for me. Seeing as well that we are now playing with 3 up top and the wingers don't really drop that deep anymore it looks like this is more the kind of player we actually need so that the 3 mids and 3 attackers can do their job

I think it really depends what we want from a fullback. If we want someone strong, physical, with a good engine who will get in the opposition box but can also defend, then Emerson looks like a great, well-rounded option.

If we want a more technical fullback who is creative, has pristine technique, can provide neat link up play and beautiful cross-field passes, then we're never going to get that from Emerson.

Barcelona fans are naturally looking for the latter, whereas Betis fans are probably happier with a good, solid full back as they aren't up against parked busses all the time.

Spurs are probably somewhere in the middle and I get the feeling Emerson will be a solid upgrade on all of our current options at RB, but isn't exactly going to blow us away with his brilliance or anything.
