I thought he was really solid today until I saw the replay of the Villa goal when I got home. That ball across goal really is his Achilles heel as he never attacks the space to cut out the cross. Despite what happened earlier in the move he really can’t be letting that ball get in between him and Lloris. If he gambled he would’ve cut it out.

As good as he’s been this season I do think he’s always got a key mistake in him. That said he’s one player who looks so much better with the double pivot of holding midfielders in front of him.

Thats the best and most accurate description of him, even if he has the odd decent game

The narrative has been set for Dier, he's lumped in that group of players who everyone likes to blame so some will always find fault with his performance.
Personally I've always liked him. In a period where we've felt we've lacked leadership he's a leader. He's adaptable and is still learning his trade as a CB. He has all the right attributes and with a bit of perseverance I think he could be real quality in that position.

I thought he had an excellent game yesterday. Read the ball well and got to everything first. Romero unfortunately left him and Emerson exposed for the goal.

I dong think he is a leader though, what makes you say he is a leader?

Not perfect but attitude is spot on, some of his blocks are fantastic and he might just look better alongside Romero.

Right now I can see why he is 2nd choice over Sanchez and Rodon.

Definitely not at fault for the goal unless you want him to be.
If ever there was a goal where the fault was that of the team rather than an individual, the one we conceded on Sunday was it.

Hojbjerg and Skipp didn’t deal with it in midfield.
Romero gets caught out of position trying to deal with it himself.
Emerson caught on the hop by this.
Dier caught on the hop by this.

Villa scored a good goal, and out unit didn’t deal with the attack as well as they could have. It’s not down to simply Dier, or Romero, or Skipp or Emerson. It’s down to all of them, and I think the more they play together the less we will see of this type of goal being conceded.

Interesting in a wider sense. Of course we tend to see what happens at either end of the pitch through our own lense. Villa did score a pretty well constructed goal that had it been scored by Kane and assisted by Son we'd have been raving about angle of runs and weight of pass, rather than calling out the Villa CBs for getting caught.

We've conceded a fair few stinkers this season, but I'm not sure this was one of them.

Hope he gets more confident next to Romero. The situation reminds me a bit of Dawson who was twice the player when he was next to Ledley King. The fact that Dier needs a 'senior' partner though indicates to me that he's not particularly a leader. He's opinionated and quite feisty, but that doesn't make a leader. Not sure what type of player Romero is in this context though. Hopefully he's vocal and helps Dier with decision making.

100% at fault, no. But he certainly didn't do himself any favors by losing the man behind him and not making a move for the ball that was probably a yard away from him.
You make it sound like the ball trickled past him at the near post and he just watched it, which is a bit harsh. I don't think it helps having the horror show of the previous league game against Arsenal where we were sliced open with cut backs from the wing to players around the penalty spot. In the position Dier is in for the Villa goal he's trying to cover as much space as possible in front of the attacker, and not just gamble to be one side or the other.

It's always so easy to judge a scenario with a hefty dollop of hindsight. As you say, he was trying to cover the near post and the cut back and got caught in no man's land.

Definitely could of done better. Ok, I’ll rephrase that. A very good defender would definitely have done better. Might still have been a goal but that near post space would have been defended much better and the cross would probably have been cut out

Love him, always have, always will.

He and Romero are made for each other as a partnership - great balance between agility and power, proactive defending and solid cover. Hope these two are our CB partnership for years to come.

What cutback? We have 6 defenders + a gk in the box vs 4 attackers

Im not hating on Dier but I dont know why people are trying to pretend like he didnt just watch the ball go across him again and let the striker score. His awareness of who is around him is pretty awful unfortunately. Its a shame as he can play very well and then switch off in key moments - Romero didnt help on this 1 either.
