Nobody is taking anything away from his quick thinking in that situation - he was fantastic. However, people are allowed to speak about his performances as a football player for spurs and the constant mistakes he makes. It is OK to separate the two scenarios.
Of course it is, I didn't say he couldn't be criticised for his mistake on the pitch. I was bringing attention to his act of quick thinking. It is ok to praise his quick action without you taking it as a being directed at you.

Its because you replied to my post with your own that it came across as directed at me. I clearly read it wrong though so apologies.

good game up until the own goal, but sums him up, always a mistake waiting to happen, teams with elite aspirations need more

Whatever his faults as a player he’s a great bloke and probably fantastic to have around the place. Og is a shame but 100% sums up his time at CB. Great 98% of the time but always got a sloppy moment in him.

I think he just thought Romero had it, and couldn't react quick enough.

A hero though for his actions today.

Can't fault him as a character and a leader, just wish he'd advanced as a player. He's potential John Terry material but he's more like Terry Scott at times.

Everyone has brains farts on the odd occasion, however he has a few every game
I wouldn’t class what happened today as a “brain fart”, I’d say Dier has paid for Romero’s mistake. He was already in an awkward position when Romero mistimed his jump, he had no time at all to react. I thought he was excellent today and usually looks excellent when he’s part of a stable defence. Tbh I’m really liking the look of Reg, Dier, Romero & Emerson.

The own goal today, highlights the main negative aspect of Dier, his decision making. If he's not sure he hesitates or gets caught in two minds. Lack of decisiveness is never a good sign for a defender.
The own goal today wasn’t Dier’s fault. What else was he supposed to do when Romero, who was completely blocking his view of the ball, missed his header?

Give the guy a bit of credit. He has had a good season. As far as I can tell, he has not made ‘a few’ mistakes per game as you put it. He was excellent in 3 opening games. Can you remind me of all the mistakes he made with those clean sheets? Palace? Injured. Chelsea? Maybe one? Same with Arsenal? And no, Villa’s goal was not just down to a mistake. The actual mistake was when Romero over committed.

So, what? He made a whoopsie and scored a silly OG. I don’t recall him being shit for any other portions of the game. He was solid throughout.

wanna talk about a player who has regular brain farts? Try barking up Sanchez tree.

We can agree to disagree then

The own goal is at 2.52. I'm not convinced Romero missed it, it was just too high for him.

It's a difficult ball for Dier as it dips quickly, with pace and is behind him. He tried to head it but the dip made it too low.

One of those things that I think I'll forgive him for.

Thought he had a good game, the OG is just a freak occurrence. I’d be more concerned about not burying Newcastle more ruthlessly, they were poor and we were toying with them but should have battered them.

He didn’t have a terrible game and he looks quite solid with Romero.
At the same time, if we replaced him with a better CB, our defence would actually be really quite strong
