Spot on! One of my biggest frustrations watching England games is how little work goes into getting Kane the ball in close. He should be the first look for anyone approaching the box but he’s often overlooked and left to pick up deflections and rebounds.
England are not set up to feed Kane. They're set up for Kane to feed others because he has more vision and ability in his little toes than our other midfielders put together.
The only player in our sqiad who could, is instructed to do so, if Foden.
And he can't even bloody get a game.

We didn’t set or settle for a draw, we were second best to the USA and were lucky to come away with a draw. Midfield 3 of Rice, Bellingham and Mount totally outplayed by the USA midfield. McKennie should have scored when Trippier had a nap. Generational talent in Kane and we couldn’t get him into the game. The draw was fortunate not planned.

Just a comment. No team can be a credit to football or a joy to watch when it features the whinging, mewling, bickering and bleating of Christian Pulisic. The only benefit of watching Maguire and Stones passing the ball to each other for a good hour was that it meant the Americans didn't have it and we didn't suffer, as we did in the Wales game, from hundreds of close-ups of Pulisic carping at the ref for not giving him a corner / free kick / penalty / throw-in / blowy / whatever. I've never knowingly supported the Welsh in any endeavour they've ever undertaken, but I have to say Pulisic and his spoiled brat crybaby face pushed me uncomfortably close to it when the two teams played.
Whats your point?☺

Maybe not the right thread but so far the world cup has been pretty boring. Some good upsets sure, but so many boring first halves. Seems even the lesser teams are well-drilled, so there are fewer mistakes, and it's really boring to watch. Four games today and I'm thinking maybe I'll just watch the second half of each.

Edit: But I know I won't. I'll sit through the first halves, complaining.

I think the lack of preparation time plays a huge factor here. Any manager would tell you that if you're short of time on the pitch, defensive shape and structure comes first and an attacking plan comes later. Then the games tend to open up in the second halves due to changes and tiredness.

World Cup early stages are always like this; cagey with teams happy to take draws rather than risk defeats. Preparation time has nothing to do with it.

I love watching the way Croatia pass and move the ball around. Southgate could do a lot worse than watch some of their videos

Watching from afar, the Southgate conundrum is an interesting one. He's managed England in two tournaments, finishing 4th and 2nd. Those are excellent outcomes. Ye haven't been this consistent - coasting to top spot in qualifiers and getting to semis and finals - in recent decades. And the 6-2 opening win here was decent. The 0-0 with America was drab, from both sides - why didn't the US swing a ball into the box for that final free kick?

I'm interested in what people would have him do differently...before the next game kicks off. By that, I mean how the personnel or team shape should change from the last game.

It sounds like dropping Mount and Sterling are popular. Foden would be one to come in. And who else? Madison? I can see an argument for TAA playing to offer some variety and possibly get more out of Kane, but Trippier has been excellent. In general, Southgate is doing a decent job but seems stifled or is himself stifling if the three behind Kane aren't clicking. They were against Iran and not against USA.

But is Southgate that bad? Ye are very likely to top the group after playing Wales...is the way this is achieved such an obvious predictor of losing in the last 16 or quarters? I don't think so.

I mean I can’t be the only one that finds the Southgate barrage of hate quite dull and forced. Yeah we played badly Friday, but people moaned about him constantly during the last Euro’s and then were singing his name by the semi. The same people who weren’t impressed by his squad now say he’s not using it right. People were apoplectic about Maguire’s inclusion - oh he’s actually playing well? Let’s move the conversation to Foden.

Thing is this is naturally a country that loves a moan. Bobby Robson is seen as saintly now but he was horribly harangued - same with Alf Ramsey in 66. We get the success we deserve.

Well, yeah – England have one of the best players/strikers of his generation and look how he's treated.

I think only one side has won two out of two so far? And that was the holders. Japan just lost to Costa Rica after beating Germany.

I remember a drab draw v Scotland in game two last summer and look how that tournament went.. I'm not worried. We saw v Iran (who then showed up Wales) how well we can play and attack. USA were good and that is going to happen, you're not going to blow teams away every game. It just doesn't happen.

I get the criticism of his decisions and tactics, but in tournaments Southgate has gotten the best results of any England manager for decades.

I can’t think of anyone in football who talks so well but delivers as little as Southgate. In an ideal world he’d be a great “team manager” if he had a top head coach to coach and select the side, decide on tactics and make substitutions.

I really admire him, even like him, but Christ he’s a very limited coach.

He’s literally the most successful manager in half a century.

This is an ignorant and very limited post.

You mean the guy who got us to a World Cup semi then Euros final only to lose on penalties? The nations league are glorified friendlies according to some, so really the only barometer is tournaments and he has done better than most since 66.

I don’t know what he should do, re Southgate. Maybe a change in formation, cos he really needs to get Kane some service. I’d maybe try this:
