A non demeaning comment on a celebrated part of someone’s culture becoming racism is frankly quite a sad position to find ourselves in. For those that did not find the comment to be racist to be racist themselves is just plain divisive. Live and let live seems a long time dead 😞

True, but he should know there's an angry mob eager to pounce on any such indiscretion and call for his head on a plate. I'd like to see the back of him, but not because of that. Because he's a ****.

Tyler is a boring, waffling wind bag. I remember thinking the comment was a bit off at the time.

Is it racist, probably not? is it nudging the edges of what’s acceptable? Yes.

Things don’t need to be black and white. There are grey areas, I don’t for a minute think he was trying to be derogatory about Sonny, but he shouldn’t have said it. It plays into the tropes and stereotypes that the kind of knuckle dragging brain dead losers shout at him from the terraces week in week out, or post on his socials on a daily basis.

A sky commentator shouldn’t be opening that particular door.

Personally think it’s high time Sky has a complete rethink of their football coverage anyway. It’s awful, Espcially when Tyler is on comms. He fails on the simplest most basic part of his job. He doesn’t commentate on the game. He’s too busy talking about drama or transfer gossip, or reeling off meaningless prosaic stats like “Of course, Spurs have never won at Anfield on the last day of April during a non leap year when the wind is blowing in a south south westerly direction on a Sunday.”

I thought the obvious disappointment in his voice when we equalised was pretty poor too…..

Hard to think he isn’t a bit anti Spurs; any other team coming from 3-0 down to equalise in injury time would’ve got a huge shout.

Skys populism commentary’s and punditry really needs to change it’s so boring and amateur. It’s like having Arsenal fan TV on.
As for Tyler’s comments it’s just whole properly not racist but xenophobic.

Hope sky have a complete rethink of the nonsense they serve up week in week out because it’s really dated.

It's a lazy stereotype that falls somewhere on the racism spectrum.

I said that the woke brigade will be clutching their chests and and sitting bolt upright after hearing that comment....
The man is a **** and always has been and his comment, along with many others he has made over time, just re-enforces that.

Headline is a bit misleading. I’ve been urging him to retire before the comment. Fuck, he’s dull.

Did he say the same thing when Jota kicked Skipp in the head?
I didn't see the game, so I'm wondering what he did say about that incident. Whatever he said, I bet he would have said something different had a Spurs player kicked one of their opponents.

To explain my pov, I agree that I don’t think that there was any racist intent. But the reason that it could be perceived as racist is because I can’t think of a martial art that South Korea is famous for.

Therefore it comes across as a generalisation about a player from Asia.

edit: to add. I think Sky’s response of reminding him of the sensitivities of language is correct, he deffo doesn’t need to be cancelled!

It is possible to still have grown up conversations about these topics without going to either extreme.

I think the problem is that Son has been subjected to racism for years and any decent commentator should be aware of this. He has shown a serious lack of judgement. Son should not have to put up with this. Tyler always comes over to me as snide and pretty creepy.

Agree. Sadly, the conversation often centres around "was it racist?" I don't think that's really the point.

A commentator's job and skills is all about their use of language. Tyler making this comment shows he's just not good at his job.

I remember about 5 or 6 years ago Son fouled a liverpool player, McManaman on comms made this ridiculous 'HAASAAAW' sound effect on the slo mo replay.
Similarly in Ndombeles 2nd game away at City, Jamie Redknapp described ndombele and sissoko as providers of the power and running to supplement Eriksens guile.
Souness also made a 'hes latin' comment against Lamela for his involvement in a Martial red too.
I doubt anything will come of this but if broadcasters are trying be more diverse in their product there does need to be an awareness of how these comments could be perceived.

Exactly. For someone who literally speaks for a living he needs to be sure his words don't even begin to cause any need to even question what he is saying. If he can't do that, especially in today's overly sensitive, for want of a better phrase, society, then he needs to just retire.

My reaction at the time was "bit racist". It was definitely unnecessary to use martial arts for an Asian. Stereotype much.
