If he wasn't a Spurs man and we were looking to appoint a bloke called Bryan Jason with an identical career trajectory at Aston Villa, 100% of fans would think it was a suicidal appointment.
To be fair knowing the club and the players inside-out does give him an advantage but if you take away the club-allegiance and romanticism there's still very little there to justify appointing him to such a big job straight off the bat.
