Maguire slows the game down so much. He always seems to wait for someone to close him down before making a pass. Stops woth the ball, waits for the press and then passes sideways.....

Because he's the polar opposite of a ball playing defender. He's uncomfortable in possession, anybody who's watched enough football or who's played at a semi-decent level can tell just by the way he traps a football that the guy isn't a natural.

He does get unnecessary stick though because regardless of his ability with the ball if he was in a side that sat deep and threw body's in the way of everything- he's decent. Good header of the ball and strong in the challenge. He's just not cut out for the elite teams who need technical players all over the pitch.

Have to say Kyle Walker gets better with age. Dominates the right flank, power, energy, reads the game so much better than he did and is as calm as you like. Worlds best RB for me. Even at 33 he looks like he’s got plenty in the tank.

Keeping possession at 2-0 and managing the game wasn't the problem. England hopefully got a reminder though about what happens if players stop wanting to run, get behind the ball, chase back and get into shape, etc. For 5-10 mins there were four or five players being really lazy and not doing any defensive work, and this was the only spell Scotland did anything and had any threat. Apart from that was a comfortable stroll in second gear, with a million miles of difference between the sides.

I do sometimes wonder - is he that good and that's why he plays for Madrid, or is playing for Madrid what's taken Bellingham to another level?

He's smart and has the bills paid, that's for sure.

You don't captain Dortmund at 19 if you ain't got it.

Yeah, he's absolutely world-class. Pep did wonders for him, he always had the physical attributes to be a great full-back and he can strike a ball as cleanly as you like, other than Kane and Huddlestone I've not seen many play a diagonal as well as Walker in a spurs shirt. He suffered with his decision making at times for us but Pep has beaten that out of him and as long as he has even 75% of the pace he has now, he should be starting every game for England.

Y'know, in a weird way, I'm starting to feel a bit sorry for slab head. He's been picked on faith but he can't even just have a quiet, uneventful game, put the toe in once or twice and put a bit of confidence in his tank.

Poor sod, needs a break - if I was him I'd be looking to get loaned out abroad, get out of the headlines for a bit and find some form again.
Nah.

He supposedly turned a move down to West Ham cause they wouldn't match his salary at United. Southgate continuing to pick him means he knows he doesn't need a move.

Also, when he was getting criticised and talk about the armband taken off him he said something along the lines of there was nothing wrong with his game and he was there on merit.

He doesn't strike me as someone who is very self-aware. A bit like Dier, points fingers at others for his mistakes.

Southgate does get it wrong (in my opinion) with his team selection and tactics but he does get kudos from me for making me enjoy international football since he's been in charge.

If we don't win anything with Bellingam, Rice, Saka and Foden all potentially being in the side for the next 4 tournaments then I'll be disappointed...but not suprised!

In ode to Jude Bellingham, can we create a thread titled ‘What were you doing when you were 20 years old’

He’s 20, the real deal on the pitch and then rocks up at post match interview and talks like a seasoned, serial winner coming towards the end of his career.

Did i mention he is 20. Maturity beyond belief.

Bellingham interviewed after the game said he saw Harry Kane in the right position as always so I fainted to shoot then just passed to Harry, he made it easy for me.
I think he deserves a bit more praise than that but he speaks well.
Like I said earlier in the game, he's some player.

Decent performance overall, not perfect but the criticism Southgate gets is OTT.

One for the unpopular opinions thread perhaps.
