Honestly dont get our Club sometimes.

Increasing Toby's wages to even 150k a week will cost us approx 20m over 4 years if you include an estimated 70k that he already gets.

Yet we will dither about, lose him, and then spend 40-50m trying to find somebody as good (which is nigh on impossible as he's one of the best in the world).

I just dont get the logic.

I wasn't aware that Toby told poch he wasn't signing a new contract I thought the issue was one of a release clause which he and the club could not agree on.

Sorry, my bad. Should have put "if" before Toby.........

Great as he is, with 2.5 years left on his deal (1.5 plus extension in our favour) we are either losing him at 31 for free, or at 30 for £25m, and that’s in 18 months time IF the clause rumours are true.

Love him though I do, it’s not a desperate situation. By the time he’s off in any of these circumstances he’ll be on the decline going by average centre back longevity and Sanchez will be either 2 or 3 years premiership experienced. If we’ve offered him a higher wage, approaching or in the £100k region, and he’s wanting an amount we just aren’t able to pay, let him run it down. He’s a very good centre back, he’s very professional and he will continue performing to a high standard. I’d rather lose him for free in July 2020 than for a huge few this coming summer.

Maybe he wants to leave

Well if Spurs aren't your boyhood club, you're getting late in your career and you see several clubs with miles more money who are going to stop you having any medals in your cabinet, and one of said clubs will more or less guarantee you those medals and a whacking great pay rise = which, as you're a long time retired, would come in handy = wouldn't you?

I am sure that DL is on it but we need to get creative here. I have said in several threads that on top of the new deals the majority have signed they should have been given a clause saying 30% pay rise at Xmas of the first year in the new stadium.

Toby may well have signed that by now as it might have meant 100k then 130k this time next year.

In his case we are now over a barrel slightly with the remaining contract length. I would say offer him 3 years on something big but not our top possible line (say 125k) with another £5m loyalty (about 30kpw) if he is still here at the end. Plus a buyout of something silly like £70-£75m (he is better than VvD but 3 years older but records are being broken every 5 mins). If he went for silly money at 30+ it wouldn't be the end of the world

It's a risk that he remains fit and in form but only a bit more

Increase everyones wages by 30% sounds like a good idea unless you look at the financials.
Our last accounts show our turnover around £200m with wages being £100m.
The new stadium is expected to bring (at best) in an extra £40-60m a year.
So if we do what you say then turnover will be £260m with wages £130m. That is fine if we just want to hold onto players and not bring anyone else in.
That would still leave toby on around £70k a week though.

Tv money has also increased and was not in our financials so may give us more room, but we still have the stadium to pay for.

It is very complicated and above any of our paygrade. It is easy to say just pay them the money. But the money has to come from somewhere. Levy will do his best to keep players and if he can't we will sell and replace.

Sure, I wouldn't blame him. As long as he isn't a dick about it and lets us know his intentions.

If we loose Walker a Toby and Rose at their peak I would understand why some fans would call us a selling club. I know it’s not that simple obviously, but from an outsiders perspective, if all three end up at teams who will win medals in the near future... I just don’t want players to see us as a stepping stone club when they sign, like Keita Balde, and demand a release clause.

I also wonder how much our transfer business effects players willingness to renew contracts. If we were more ambitious with our dealings would players be more willing to sign on the dotted line. Saying that, if we did buy more high profile players then they would come with high profile wages which would, as has been well covered on these pages, have a knock on effect.

Ultimately, if Toby is really sticking his feet in the sand than I’m sure every big club in Europe, City, RM, BM etc will pay what ever it takes. For that reason I struggle to see him here beyond this season, after all Levy runs us as a business and there is no business in keeping an unhappy player for another season only to loose him for a cut price fee later down he line. All of which is a great shame.

Remember it was only a couple of years ago he was on loan at southampton because he couldn't get in the atletico side.

Id imagine a bid in the region of 50-60M would be hard for the club to turn down.

That’s because you assume the only issue is wages.

Many rate him as the best centre back in the prem. At 29 he might want to win a title in a major league before retiring.

We don’t know the details of the contract negotiations but let’s not blame the board and Levy based on an assumption.

You would need a ready replacement if you were comfortable about him leaving. I don’t know if that is Foyth or Dier. Neither are at Toby’s level.

Agree this is what I have mentioned before that if players want to leave for teams that can win titles etc and huge wages, then you can't blame him just like walker has done who will get at least 1 medal this year compared with nothing at spurs.

No chance. If VVD is worth 75 there's no way Toby would go for less.
I would hope not but looking at how things are panning out, if the offer was on the table then I'm sure it would be given serious consideration.
