Someone needs to coach some finishing into him, it's embarrassing at times. Other than that he offers something and effects games. I'd only sign him of we can't get better as his finishing so bad.
I imagine he’s been getting that coaching for years now. This is just who he is, and why we can buy him for 15 million after he went for 45 million only a few years ago.

Agree.

My current thought on Werner is Johnson offers what he does and we're probably better off having Johnson higher up the pecking order.

I don’t think we’ve been able to see the best of Werner because for one reason or another the players refuse to pass to him when he’s in acres of space . It’s happened numerous times the past couple of home games .
But why... is it our tactics on the left side or his teammates not trusting him?

HIs movement was excellent today, good to see him get his goal after that bad miss earlier on. My faith might be blind but i just feel he is gonna help us in some big moments this season

I think Werner is much more secure technically than Johnson. He takes his man on a lot more and usually beats him too. No slate on Johnson but think Timo is the better player as of now (as he should be given he's 5 ish years older). Think we could do a lot worse than keeping him.

I don’t mind keeping Werner. But for me it’s adding another 7/10 player to the attacking options.

We spent over £40m on Johnson and his goal and assist return for a first season at a new club is pretty decent.

Not only that but at least twice he put excellent crosses in which went completely across the face of the goal begging to be tapped in. Personally, I think getting him in at the price touted wouldn't be the worst piece of business this club has ever done.

And despite the reaction from the match thread hive about our performance, had we taken our chances the margin of victory could easily have been wider.

For me I think signing him is a no brainer. He hasn’t gelled with the team completely yet and already makes great runs and drags defenders out of position. When he gets on the same page as Maddison, Bentancur and Porro he will be even more dangerous. Add a couple more goals and his confidence will grow and those 1 on 1s will go in more regularly.

This is one of those areas of improvement that when it clicks we will become much more deadly.

Werner made a few cutbacks where either it wasn't executued correctly or no-one read it.

Look at City and Arsenal now, they score so many goals this way because it is just programmed into them.

It also does't matter what the opposition do cause they keep scoring them.
That’s where Richie is usually around so I think in those situations it gives him a chance. Poacher style. Son is more run on to it and finish. So can see why Werner could be an asset.

Doesn't Werner prefer the left and Johnson the right though?

Think he could be possibly be pivotal at Villa Park next week with that big pitch, Villa's high line and his movement.

If we get him for the 15m suggested I think that's a remarkable bargain.
I’m not convinced either way yet tbh. Like others have said, it’s a great deal, but I question the wisdom of buying another guy who takes up a squad place and wages while not taking us up a level.

He has some great qualities, but he also has some glaring flaws.

It’s great to see him scoring though, and if he can consistently contribute goals and goal involvements then I’d be open to changing my mind.

It’s just too early to say yet.

That summarises where I am with the signing.

As far as value and suitability for our playing style is concerned, it's a no-brainer.

For the front 3 positions we are going into next season with Son, Richarlison, Kulusevski, Johnson, Werner, Solomon, Gil and Veliz.

Son aside, none really stand out as reliable quality though several have the potential to be.

I'd be surprised if we are looking to sell Solomon, only Gil looks like it might be the right time for him to move on.

This half season loan is Werner's chance to convince us to give him a way back into the Prem at the top end. With what I have seen so far I'm not convinced he particularly improves us though I am open to him changing my mind.

Right now it’s a good deal, with all the injuries we have had and international absences he’s been a bit of a god send. But if we are looking to really kick on, his place should be going to someone like Neto, Williams or whoever the scouting team unearth.

I think we've done a really good deal here. A half season loan when we have injuries and he's desperate to prove himself for the international tournament in the summer.

If he shines, then we can sign him for a really low fee for a German international striker.

It all makes sense. Just a question about whether we make it permanent.

His performance second and first half was night and day. He combined well with Johnson as well.

I’d like to see a front line of Werner Son Johnson from the start.

I was at the game, I would be hesitant to sign him

I think all our wide players are crap

Everyone is on because of the comeback but I honestly think we are so shit out wide. Our players barely beat their players in and none of them can put a cross in unless they are in the box across goal

Yes it worked today but we are so predictable its why we are struggling to beat teams and even create chances

Our players rarely find and teams now sit deep, with the inverted fullback the wide player is hugging the touch line. Neither him or Johnson can cross the ball from that range

Crap is a strong word, I would probably say it in the heat of the moment during a match or after a game but it’s not true.

None of them are top quality and that’s the real issue, along with the fact they all have similar and/or severe limitations. The fact that none of them can beat people, none of them have explosive 1v1 ability allied with technical quality etc, that’s what makes them all standout out so much and frustrates us.

For that reason, I wouldn’t sign Werner. I’d spend the money on a real game changer who offers a lot more on the ball and something more than our other wide players.

Hopefully his goal today gives him more confidence and he can improve until the end of the season.

I don't dislike him, and he's produced in several games but eh, not sure he gets added permanently tbh. As a loan to help cover us for the rest of the season I can't complain at all really. Would rather another wonderkid punt as a squad option going forwards. Getting some quality out wide this summer ain't going to be cheap though.
