I was listening to Max + Charlie baker on talksport earlier, pair of them joking that Max was wearing full chain mail and Charlie had an England flag stapled to his face and had got someone to shoot him in the eye with an arrow to demonstrate how patriotic they were :D

They interviewed... I dunno, someone, about the team and and they also said they thought Southgate had done an incredible job and it struck me: it's all about "managed expectations". No matter how hyped some fans get, it'll never be as rabid as it was during the late 90s - early 00s, where we expected to win everything, England songs were charting, the whole country would be up for it, then we'd all be very English about it when we didn't win anything.

Southgate has lowered the bar significantly, he's made the team so vanilla that any mention of potentially doing well now comes across as hopeful optimism rather than fan driven confidence.
Yet we are so much better now than then and I am more confident now than any over the top expectations that the media (Sun) had then.
I’m not on Twitter and I seriously think I am the better for it as I seem to miss a lot of the weird narrative around Southgate and England.

I might actually watch tonight's game. I don't often bother with England games outside of the tournaments themselves.

FWIW I think Southgate has done an incredible job and don't understand the constant clamour to oust him. He might be a bit boring but the results speak for themselves. We are getting to semis and finals regularly. I wouldn't want him at spurs but international football is a very different beast to club football.

My view is he took over when we had a young team, and were pretty weak in several areas.

Despite that he got better tournament results than any England manager in my lifetime in taking us to a final and a semi final.

I'm usually quite down on the England team, I never believed the "Golden Generation" was special, but I think right now we do have something special.

Kane, Bellingham and Foden are simply brilliant players. I think we need a manager to unleash this attacking talent. Southgate's safety first approach was right for the previous teams, but I think his time as England manager is coming to an end.

But I'll look back at his time as manager as the best in my lifetime though I preferred watching the teams of Robson, Venables and Hoddle.

I get it though, i don't follow England but a kit manufacturer shouldn't have carte blanche to just change a nations flag as they please.

unless it is a commemorative piece then the flag of the country should remain.

Nike would never do that to the American flag randomly.

Where was this energy when Umbro did this in 2010.

The design for sports brand Umbro depicts the St. George's cross in four colours and is intended to represent the country's diverse cultural makeup.

I like the top design and it's still got red crosses on it, I actually like the idea of different colours to represent our diversity.

I don't even remember the bottom kit!
Is that a keepers shirt? 😂

Whatever the result at the Euros, this should be Southgate's last one. If he left after the previous Euros I think he'd be remembered far more fondly as England manager. What he did for the squad unity in the main getting rid of the club kliqs shouldn't be forgotten about. He also got us to a World Cup semi and a Euros final, which we were penalties away from winning.

The last World Cup was a disappointment, but say Kane's penalty goes in and it could be very different today.

there was no twitter back then. Friendsreunited didn’t concern themselves about anything but seeing if Julie from Y8 is still a slag or if Peter finally went to prison like everyone thought he would.

What am I supposed to be seeing here? Because to me a USA shirt with white stars against a blue background as a core design feature is very clearly an attempt to pay homage to the flag and incorporate a key feature into a shirt design, as opposed to changing the flag itself. From memory the USA 94 alternate shirt was red and while stripes, so the two shirts together represented the flag in its entirety.

Ok, so I'm only just catching this news and maybe I'm old fashioned but you don't just decide the change a nations flag.
Our flag is red and white and in my own special, petty little way, it's the only time I'll wear anything red.
My family heritage is a total mixture of Irish, Welsh, Scottish and English but I was born here and I'm proud of that so when I'm supporting my national team, I want to be wearing the flag, not some weird fucking stylised version of it.

No, it's not going to keep me up at night because I have bigger problems but it's a pointless and somewhat insulting thing to do imo.

Check your privilege sir.

Sat in a coffee shop and noticed a little girl drawing the Union Jack in crayon. I pointed out she’d used maroon instead of traditional red so should probably start again.

She mumbled something about not having another red so I kindly fished out my emergency Commemorative 1966 ‘Hurst Red’ felt tip and handed it to her.

By now her mother had brought back their drinks and asked why I was talking to her child.

I explained that her daughter was using the wrong shade of red and that we didn’t fight the Nazis on the beaches so that libtard toddlers could disrespect our great grandfathers by using a woke shade of red.

The lady said I was a ‘bloody weirdo’ and told me to ‘piss off’ but I refused to be dragged down to her level so instead, calmly snatched back my pen and angrily scribbled over the maroon bits of her child’s drawing with the correct shade of red.

The mother had the tenacity to actually claim it ‘didn’t matter’ because she was ‘three for gods sake’ but I told her that ‘yes it did matter, actually because if you let three year olds blithely besmirch our great nation by using maroon on the Union Jack today, tomorrow you’ll have non-binary immigrants force feeding you tofu through your anus that turns you gay.’

There was something uplifting in the way the store manager violently escorted me out to the jeers of my fellow customers that confirmed what I had suspected all along - ALL of them were on MY side but were obviously too scared to speak up for fear of being cancelled.

I think it could be argued we should have won the euros in 2021, and likely would have had Southgate been less conservative in the final. His decision to sub in Rashford and Sancho just for the penalties was also disastrous. That final defeat was very much on him.

Quick, delete this before Mary Earps see it!
Pah, I mean, who buys a goalie shirt anyway?!

(Ok, so I actually have a lovely Keepers shirt from the old Adidas/Holsten days and it's a lovely shirt but I've never worn it because it has stupid elbow padding).

Edit...

There have been some truly horrific keepers shirts over the years but the 90's had so many disasters.
