It's fucking embarassing having a thread for a scum player on a spurs forum, especially when it's full of wanky comments about how good he is.

Well that's the beauty of general football.

Indeed. Similar to the booing debate, I would never question someone's right to boo or bitch, just as I would never question someone's right to have some love in for a scum player, but I do question why the fuck they do it.

In fairness to the OP, it was hardly a thread designed as a glowing tribute to the new Goon and I would say most of the responses are more along the lines of how he wasn't really what they needed, despite being a good player. No harm in discussing your rivals plus points and poor points.

You're confusing love ins with admiration for a world class player. We could all sit here and delude ourselves that Ozil is crap, and slag him off, but what would that acheive?
Me, I'll save the booing till will play them ...;0)

Because class is class whoever they play for. I mean, just out of curiosity, what's your opinion of Dennis Bergkamp?

It will be interesting to see how he does in the League. It surely doesn't help Arsenal's lack of defensive capability, but in truth, they have always relied on forward play to counter this. The biggest thing one must wonder is how Ozil will do being closed down faster, and with much less space. Ronaldo gave him all the space and time in the world, and more (http://squawka.com/news/2013/04/03/...pions-league-game-vs-galatasaray/201304036889). He is going to be closed down much faster.

He is also going to need to contribute more defensively in the PL. He has been criticized in the past by the German National Coach, as not working hard enough, and contributing minimally to the defensive efforts. More recently so, but Ancelotti, "Between defense and midfield we have a big hole. If we want to play good football, players like Isco and Ozil must also do defensive work."

I expect him to be phenomenal on attack, and improve Arsenal's possession numbers and chances created. But, as I stated, they have relied on this to counteract their defense in recent years. The problem for them though, is that they have shown to be exposable with this. Villa took advantage of it, and we failed to, but we had them on the counter-attack for the majority of the game. In the end, I expect Arsenal to shine against weak opponents and get picked apart by the big boys and maybe even the odd mid-table side. Same old story, just with a bit more flair and more umlaut.

They didn't look particularly poor defensively against us, with our £26m striker feeding off scraps.

But as the post you replied to says against Villa who played predominantly on the counter they were defensively all over the place.

First game jitters. Arsenal let in less goals than United, Chelsea and Spurs last year, whilst scoring more than City, Spurs and almost as many as Chelsea.

I don't understand where this idea comes from that they're some kind of shambles defensively. It's not backed up.

First game jitters, are you sure?

There was no protection in front of the back 4 at all, Villa constantly ran at the 2 CB's at will, that not jitters, that's no DM and no platform to defend properly. They made Agbonlahor who's far from the greatest look like a world beater.

On the 3rd goal the nearest non Villa participant as the FB scored was the ref for fucks sake.

Unfortunately our lack of quick movement or quick ball movement allowed them to get a much better defensive shape against us.

By the third goal they were pressing for an equalizer and were down to 10 men so of course there was a huge gap. That happens sometimes when you roll the dice.

If that's the case for the third goal that's awful discipline, they played another 11 minutes after Luna's goal. That's a lot of time to decide to leave nobody barring the ref at home. Effectively poor defensive play killed what chance they had with plenty of time left.

Fair enough, but it was the first game of the season, as I said. I don't think we'd want to be too critical if it was us. If you want to talk about turgid defensive displays at the emirates, just look at our previous two visits and when we had a man sent off, it was our centre forward, not a centre back and we weren't chasing a goal - we were leading.

The fact is that they have had a better defensive record than us, consistently. Maybe they have lacked that midfield drive since Gilberto Silva to push on for the title, but we're not competing with them for that, we're competing with them for 4th. We played them last week by the way, I only saw us making defensive errors - not them.
