Ajax and Tottenham ‘reached a verbal agreement’ on Sunday for Steven Bergwijn, according to De Telegraaf. The Eredivisie winners will pay a club record fee of €30m to Spurs. They are now ‘waiting for the confirmation email’ from Spurs and ‘want to approve Bergwijn today’.

That fee seems too little IMO, and is that really a club record fee for Ajax? Seems small for a club of their size.

Ajax are famous, but not rich. They fund themselves similarly to Southampton: by having a world-class academy and selling on some of their best young players for high fees. The other talented young players go on to play for Ajax and win things.

Except, of course, Champions League semi-finals ;)

Very shrewd operators Ajax, but would frustrate the feck outta me if I were a fan. That said, I'm all for self sustainability.

Just since 17/18 (transfermarkt)

Frenkie de Jong to Barca £77.4 m
Matthijs de Ligt to Juventus £76.95 m
Davidson Sanchez to Spurs £37.8 m
Hakim Ziyech to Chelsea £36 m
Donny van de Beek to United £35.1 m

That's some serious wedge in, and still there record signing would be Bergwijn for €30 m

Glad to get most of our money sans wages back on Berg. Also means our war chest is still bulging. Could see some exciting late deals if we can continue to get the unwanted players out sooner rather than later.

Hope it’s true for Stevie’s sake as we know he wants to go back home so I don’t bear any bad feelings to this and wish the guy well!
Couldn’t understand why Everton were even mentioned!

He has, as we all probably know, the makings of a superstar player. Ajax certainly must agree. They could go on to sell him for 60/70 million and we might live to regret selling.

But look, he's not happy. He needs game time. We weren't giving it to him and when we did he certainly put the effort in. So he goes with my blessing and I hope he goes on to fulfill his dreams.

I've not seen anything in him to think he won't be more than a good, average winger. He doesn't have the mentality or high-level skill to be a superstar, IMHO.

Ajax have sold big consistently for years but rarely spend so much on one player.

I believe on current conversion rates this is around £25m and we paid around £27m.

Seems like a good deal for all concerned.

I think "superstar" is a bit hyperbolic.

But he is a talented player and some of his performances for the Netherlands bodes well for Ajax.

Cant understand why we are linked with Depay but are letting Bergwijn go.

I don't understand why people keep wondering why we're interested in one player while letting Bergwijn go.

Bergwijn wants to leave and the manager doesn't play him. Why would we keep him?

Doesn't he want to go because he's not playing Mr insider?

Homesick isn't he? Probably why he wouldn't sign for Utd or Everton I'd assume.
Its possible he wouldn't be homesick if he was getting reasonable game time. Aren't we likely to be in the same boat with Depay down the line or do you think he will start over the regular 3, its unlikely he would want to be 2nd string. He would need to set the world alight wouldn't he?

Either he's homesick or it's an excuse. I'd say he's homesick. I don't see much point in Depay now that we have Richarlison. That would be Sonny, Richarlison and Depay basically scrapping for the same position. I'd rather we spent elsewhere, and since we're very cramped for non HG spaces, I'd rather not waste one on a player we don't need.

Well I fully agree with the bit about spending elsewhere, (if we got Depay) somebody is possibly going to get less game time than they wish even with the increase in substitutions. Maybe someone else will be homesick in a years time (If I had moved to live in another country and wasn't playing I would be homesick too).
