10 reasons why I wish we were in Europe

I know this is a fairly pointless thread, but I think we will really regret not qualifying for Europe last season.

Now I know Harry didn't seem bothered at the time and some people (probably him included) will put our excellent start to this season down to not qualifying (which is a good point), but I'd still have loved it if we were playing in the Europa.

Here's my reasons:

1) I want to see Pav play more and not be so unsettled. This concerns me because I'm an fan and I want him to stay.

2) We could see to see a bit of Bostock.

3) We could see some Geo. Aren't we all itching to see him play? I am, I want to find out how he's developing.

4) Crouchy could get more time on the pitch. And maybe force himself into the starting line-up.

5) Players like Bale, Hutton, Dawson (when fit) and Naughton could get a run out. And they need it.

6) When Woody's fit it's going to be interesting if Bassong is sacrificed or not. Either way, playing the other in Europe would keep them ticking over.

7) When Modric is fit, if Krancjar is relagated to the bench he could get more time.

8) It's another competition to win. Yes it is rubbish but I'd hate to see another English team win when it could have been us. And besides, a trophy's a trophy and more than Arsenal have got.

9) More cash.

10) MORE SPURS GAMES to enjoy. As a fan I enjoy watching any Spurs game, even if it's not that important. I just want to watch Spurs play.

The thing is I really think we've got the squad to cope with it, and in fact we've got such a big squad we might well need it to keep everyone happy and keep them developing.

What do you think?

It's always nice to be in Europe, but the Waffa/Europa is a bit of a joke competition. It drags on and on and half the teams in it are below Championship standard. More chance of injuries to disrupt our charge on the season.

The closest we got to the top 4 was when we weren't in any cups...

Agree with some points but not so much with others. This might sound weird but I like the fact we have less games for the players to play in, if their attitude is right then it will make them work harder to try to get in the matchday squad for the league games.

Pav will get his chance with injuries/suspensions, hence what has happened with Defoe. He may only get a place on the bench to start with, but if he is fit then he will get minutes on the pitch, and it will be up to him to take his chance.

Also, I would prefer us to have the week to work on things in training rather than be in Belgium for a Thursday kick off to then come back and have to play on a Sunday.

Which makes my final point, purely selfish.......I much prefer Saturday 3pm kick offs!

Points 1-7 are really just one point: you want to see fringe players get more time. I guess I agree with that to a certain extent, along with watching more spurs games is always a plus, but I really think that not being in the tournament has done us a favour. As Kendall said, we will get less injuries; not just because we are playing less games, but it also avoids the cumulative effect it would have on some of the squad. Furthermore, I'm really not sure that being in the Europa League brings in much more money, has much of an effect on the types of players we can sign, and ultimately it is still a very difficult trophy to win, simply because of the amount of games you need to go through without a bad performance.

Surely it's FIVE reasons? Six of the reasons you listed were "insert name could have more playing time".

EDIT: Teddy beat me to it.

I'm happy to not be in Europe for one season. This season seems to me to be the toughest in a long time. Man City have spent some serious money and they aren't in Europe either. So they will be a big challenger to the top 4. Aston Villa and Everton will be around the top 6. And Sunderland need to be taken seriously aswell this season. So i think we might need to take advantage of playing fewer games so that we can push for a top 6, or maybe a top 4 finish this season.

Next season we should be set to take on the extra games.

Yeah some good points here - thanks for the replies.

In response, I don't want us to be in Europe and take it particularly seriously - just use it to to keep the squad happy and (purely selfish reason) so we can watch more football.

And if we were to win it (which, given the quality of the other teams and the quality of our fringe players would have been quite possible) that would be one hell of a bonus. For me trophies, even if they have been devalued, are still what we play for.

I agree with the point about if there is a season when we're not to be in Europe then, yes, it is this one.

But with the World Cup looming it's also a season when players not getting time on the pitch are going to get more unhappy than usual. I don't want us to lose some of these talented players in January because, at last, we have an impressive squad.

We should just play the same B team that Villa, and at times us, deployed last season in the uefa cup and have a go with it, atleast in the early stages including the group stage of the competition. Give a chance to the fringe players and youngsters an opportunity to impress on the international scene, with a good mix of a few physical players and the more technical ones, including an introduction to Ryan Mason.

I know where you're coming from. We have a big squad now and its going to be difficult to keep players happy. And i do love European nights aswell. I guess it helps that we're loaning players out instead this season. Even if the youngsters get a run out in Europe, they still need to play regular football in England. So i think it helps that they're playing in the lower divisions.

But for the likes of Giovani, Bentley and Pavyluchenko it would certainly help to have European football, just to give those guy some games. You never know when they're going to be needed, and we want them to be sharp when they are called on. Hopefully the FA Cup and Carling Cup will provide enough action for those players.

It would be great to see those players but i would prefer to have a settled side without distractions.

I argued towards the end of last season that it was good for fringe players, experience, exposure for the Spurs brand, a little extra money and a little prestige

BUT if I'd known we'd be doing this well in the league I'd quite happily have missed out on it. We want to be focused on beating Stoke this weekend rather than flying to the middle of nowhere to play a bunch of hackers in a freezing stadium !

I'm glad we are out of Europe, for one season at least.

Gives us a chance to step back, see where we are, a little more time to work on things on the training ground. Let Harry work on the team and individuals so that when we do have the inconvenience of a trip to Russia or Ukraine then a long fight back home and about twenty minutes to get ready for the next game, we are far better prepared and settled.

I think the squad is a little bloated. Even with European games I think some mid level players (not good enough for the first eleven, but not youngsters who will improve with game time) would not get enough games.

The european home games in 06/07 were brilliant because we'd been craving them for so long, but the next 2 seasons I found them fairly boring if I'm honest.

What to discuss? The only subject for a Spurs fan would be - are there other reasons and there obviously are. One that all of you will like IMO - to get more European experience before next season participation in the CL:violin:

It would be nice to be in Europe but if we finish high in the table it will be worth missing out for this year.
