Sandro, he has captained Brazil I think too.. With us trying to sign everyone from the Favela, we're gonna need The Beast to keep them on track.

First off. BALE SHOULD NOT BE CAPTAIN.

Secondly, as much as Sandro could be a good captain, I don't think so just yet. Maybe when he has got his head around the English language a bit more and is able give clear and concise instructions as well as be able to give a team talk without having to stop to think about each word he has to say then, then yeah, but until then maybe just as a stand in for the odd game here or there.

I think Daws should, as some others have mentioned here, do the whole club captain thang. He obviously wont be first choice so being club captain would be better then just taking the captaincy off him. It might also put a few noses out of joint if he was dumped as captain unceremoniously. I see it as more of an honorary role in recognition of his commitment and service to the club and an elevation in stature. I reckon he will end up retiring with us and staying beyond in some other capacity so he would offer continuity to all the faces that will be passing in, and out, of our doors.

As Kaboul has not been around the first team for a long while I don't see him coming straight back in and being made captain, that 'aint AVB's style anyway to give it to someone, (time for you best Tommy Cooper impression) just like that. I also am not sure if he is a big enough personality to be captain, he comes across as quite reserved. I also don't think he has captained anywhere for a sustained period so he is a no for me.

That leaves it to be a toss up between two. Jan and Hugo.

My personal preference would be for an on-field player to be captain and so I would lean to Jan, although I wouldn't be against Hugo becoming captain as I don't see much to pick between the two. Looking at the two personalities and the style of captaincy they would offer, I think they would be quite different. Hugo would be the more serious and Jan a bit more jovial and relaxed, that's just my personal impression, it might be different though. I suppose on that basis, Hugo being a more serious person, I would want Hugo. He is someone who I think would really impart his frame of mind on to others and would get his team-mates to really take the games seriously. To really concentrate and cut out those silly mistakes. Now I think about it a bit more, Hugo comes across as more of a leader, Jan is more one of the boys. It is a hard choice.

Either of the two and I would be happy to be honest.

I really don't think it matters. Being captain might give a boost to an individual player but those which are captain material should be captains armband or not. In some places captains are not chosen out of any talent but simply by seniority it really isn't a big deal.

But regardless of the merits of captainship I think who ever AVB believes to be captain will make the best captain. This is because the skills involved in being captain in my view, things such as respectability, likeability, authority and dedication can only truly be seen through the day to day actions of the individuals involved.

Dawson is famously likeable is a senior figure which normally brings respect and authority also he seems to be dedicated when he plays on the field. Huddlestone also is apparently a highly respected figure as well, but these themselves are just rumours and via my interpretation on paper Lloris and Vert make good candidates but we have little knowledge of how they are actually perceived by the players and have no idea how giving them the armband would affect player politics. For example many might be angry at a young player which might not be established in the group gets ahead of already established player to get the armband, if this is the case then it would be a remarkably bad idea to give the captaincy to Lloris or verts.

Dawson is a born leader, if he is at the club next season (which I hope he is) then its a no brainer. I don't believe he will start every game in which case I'd vote Vertongen as v captain.

Dawson switches off at least as much as Vertonghen does, and doesn't have anywhere near his ability, so I'm not sure why this is being used against Vertonghen. he has immense character and leads by example. sure, he's not perfect, but he's most definitely captain material.

Sandro - The beast of Whitehart Lane

In the Middle of the park and can clearly lead by example, not to mention destroy those around him who don;t pull their weight.

People seem to forget Dawson was (rightly in my view) 5th choice at the start of last season. Seems a lovely guy and been a good servant but take sentiment out of it he is not good enough for the top 4. He may survive this summer simply because his departure would mean us needing to buy a new CH, but I suspect if DL gets a decent offer for a player of his age he would be gone.

Does it not say something about Dawson that he started as 5th choice, knuckled down to get match fit and then made himself a mainstay in the team? I dont think he will just be in the squad/team next season just as a survivor.
Kaboul will have to do the same this year to prove that he should be first choice.

I always prefer an outfield player as a captain, either a defender or central midfielder. Dawson seems logical choice to continue and as players like Vertonghen spend more time at the club then they can be considered to captain the side.

I'd make Freund capt, just so he can be on the field to celebrate winning the coin toss at the start of the game (y)
