i was thinking about our squad needs and decided to resurrect this thread rather than create a new one. This isnt a post that is pointed to transfer but more squad balance.

GK
Llloris, Forster, Austin,

I appreciate the form of Lloris has been up and down but I don't we should be too hasty in bringing in a high profile replacement. Lloris seems to suffer from occassional slips but they dont last long and then he usually goes on a run of good form. Forster is a very good back up keeper and I have less concern with him than i ever did with Gazaniga, Hart or the italian gk (who's name escapes me). Do we really want to bring in someone like Pickford? He gives off really strong Joe Hart vibes in that he doesnt seem to be a calm head which is what both Lloris and Forster are.
Given our style of play do we think Pickford has the type of passing and footwork to be a good fit.

Defence:
Dier, Romero, Davies, Lenglet, Tanganga, Sanchez

We have one and a half stand out CBs. Romero is the stand out of our backline. Then we have Dier and Lenglet who can put in really good performances. If we manage to bring in a new CB which one of that list leaves? Dier and lenglet can play as the ball playing CB but i think our undoing is the balance when Romero doesnt play - I've seen team press up on our left and force us on to our right hand side where we have Sanchez and Emerson unable to get out and end up playing long.

WBs:
Doherty, Emerson, Spence, Perisic, Sessegnon, (Udogie, Reguilon)

Obviously the last few weeks has had us rumoured to be looking for RWB. But we also have Udogie coming in next season at LWB - meaning Perisic (who is still able to perform at a strong level) would either move to FW or RWB position and negates the need for either an AM or a new RWB. If we bring in another RWB that could leave us at the end of the season with 8 WBs and little leverage to sell the ones we don't want.

The other issue aside from numbers is the style of play: its been long theorised that Perisic playing at LWB negatively impacts Son's game and I agree. When we have Sessegnon charging up the Left he is creating space by trying to transition quickly in behind the defence. This gives Son more space to drop inside and make his own movement on the inside Left channel. Perisic doesnt attack the space, he progresses the ball slowly and looks to deliver to the back post. This means that Son is already crowded out by the time the ball gets into the final third. With Udogie having a more similar style to Sessegnon I think we will see the return to form of Son next season, especially if Perisic moves to the right hand side.

Regarding the other flank, i wonder if one of the reasons for Spence's omission from action is because of compatibility with Kulusevski. Spence likes to overlap and get to the byline. Kulu likes to start wide and attack the side of the box like a wide forward (rather than an inverted winger who would come inside much earlier and encourage the overlap). Doherty matches that style really well because he creates an overload in the box. Emerson doesnt seem to have attacking instincts and makes poor attacking decisions.

Midfield:
Bentancur, Hojbjerg, Skipp, Bissouma, Sarr

This is one area I don't think we need any changes in. The above group give us a nice balance. They all display good ball winning and retention, they can all progress the ball forward safely with Bentancur and Sarr having better passing range and Skipp and Sarr being more box to box options. If we are going to look for creativity from this area we should look for one more but I dont see that happening.

Forwards:
Kane, Son, Richarlison, Kulusevski, Gil, Lucas

We've also seen the emergence of Gil as a sound back up option for Kulusevski which is great. Lucas will likely be leaving at the end of this season. If Perisic moves to RWF that creates some good balance across the front line in having both central and wide creative options, fast forwards that can break the lines, options that can attack the 6 yard box, and players that can run at the back line and/or deliver from wide. I think perhaps we are missing 1 really physical type, but i dont think i would bring one in to replace the current 6 (Perisic rather than Lucas)

Not included GLC, Winks or Ndombele but that is going to create more barriers to balance and not discussed youth options which is important for any squad balance because there is already the youth thread.

*Apologies for the length of this post but im bored and trying to distract myself from things that have been going on for me lately.

Yes I understand that. I said "a few non home-grown players" by which I meant one or two. My other point is that I am suggesting we just 'dump' a number of first team players anyway in the hope that they realise they will never wear the shirt again and need to find another club rather than them just taking the money. Cut the deadwood = cut the cycle.
Who replaces these players that we are going to just dump? You can't get rid of 5 or 6 you've listed and replace them with 2. You leave the squad short of 3 to 4 players.

Don't think it would make much difference to the quality of play. Would rather see youngsters than the same old 'deadwood drivel'. Let's end the cycle.

What youngsters? Feeding them to the wolves isn't the answer for their confidence or progression.

This sort of suggestion only works if we have nothing to play for this season, we have top 4, the FA Cup and CL still to compete for.

Play/keep Forster, Romero, Bentancur, Bissouma, Sarr, Perisic, Kane, Kulu, Richarlison. Son, Gil and Spence. Dump the rest. Play some youngsters and/or sign two CBs. We've been playing counter attacking football and/or boring dull football for too lomg now and celebrating 4th place for too long - as if it's a trophy. Let's be Dortmund, have some fun - and maybe win the odd trophy.

Dortmund only have Bayern and maybe Leipzig to contend with. We have Chelsea, City, Liverpool, Man Utd, Arsenal and now Newcastle to contend with plus the vast majority of Premier League teams that could blow even Bayern out the water financially.

It's almost a different game we're playing

Will be interested to see how the club navigates registering players for the 2nd half of the CL. I can see Porro taking Gil's place in List A and I imagine we'll have Danjuma registered in place of Lucas. Also, with Spence going out on loan, we're restricted to naming 16 players in List A as our number of locally trained players drops down from 8 to 7, so an additional player might miss out from being registered and that is before you consider that we might sign another non-HG player (Hincapie for example).
We can just list White instead of Spence and have 8 HGs I think.

Anyone knows whether Udogie and Sarr need to be part of the 17 Non HG players as they turn 21 this season?

Need to start to shift a few of this list to make space for CBs and a possible Kane replacement.

This Season the players who born after 1 Jan 22, stilled count to be u21 quota for EPL

that mean Udogie & Sarr not count to be non HG quota
But Gil shall be count including Harvey White for HG quota
