This seems to be the most essential signing needed in January and the most notable hole in our squad. At present if Gomes gets an injury we are in dire straits.

(along with a back-up to Wilson if O'Hara does not return on the 15th)

Keepers linked:

Scott Loach - Watford (confirmed by player)
Asier Riesgo - Real Sociedad (confirmed by club)
Stipe Pletikosa - Spartak Moscow (confirmed by club)
Joe Lewis - Portsmouth
Asmir Begovic - Porstmouth
Fraser Forster - Norwich (Newcastle)
Eldin Jakupovic - Lokomotiv Moscow
Owain Fon Williams - Stockport
David James - Portsmouth
Artur Boruc - Celtic

Who would people like to see join? Who do you think it likely we will get?

I'm pretty sure all the Park Lane are putting a few quid together and buying Posh's goalie as Gomes' back up. 'Sign him up, sign him up, sign him up' basically means we've purchased him already.

After his performance today, I'm sure we'll be linked with Joe Lewis.

im sure we have already been linked with Lewis.

I've searched and the only club I've found linked is Everton

It's complicated however by the fact that a more high profile Joe Lewis is the guy who owns Enic who owns us!

Maybe it was Loach then. We got linked with a few of the young England keepers in the last window.

http://www.newsoftheworld.co.uk/sport/football/658649/DAVID-JAMES-TO-JOIN-TOTTENHAM-THIS-WEEK.html?OTC-RSS&ATTR=Football&utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+Score_Tottenham+(Tottenham)

DAVID JAMES has played his last game for crisis club Portsmouth and will reunite with Harry Redknapp at Tottenham this week.

England goalkeeper James, 39, has missed Portsmouth's last five Premier League games and manager Avram Grant has been unable to give a definite reason for his absence, citing illness and a calf injury. Club sources claim Grant has been told not to pick James in case he aggravates a long-term knee problem, scuppering a move to White Hart Lane.

Redknapp will pay a nominal fee because skint Portsmouth are desperate to remove James's £50,000-a-week wages from their payroll. The Spurs boss wants veteran James to compete with Heurelho Gomes for the number one spot at White Hart Lane.

Grant has sanctioned James's departure after being impressed by the form of Bosnian youngster Asmir Begovic. Former Chelsea chief Grant said: "Asmir is young but he is also very good. He will become one of the best keepers in the country. Also, James has silly hair."

James has played 141 games since joining Pompey from Manchester City in the summer of 2006 and was a key part of the team Redknapp led to FA Cup glory in 2008. Redknapp has already raided Portsmouth for Jermain Defoe, Peter Crouch and Niko Kranjcar. Grant will also be forced to sell defender Younes Kaboul to Manchester City and midfielder Nadir Belhadj to Birmingham to reduce debts of £60 million pounds.

-------------

So, despite Harry coming out this week and saying James isn't a number 2 goalie and he's not interested, NotW seem to think otherwise. It's the battle of the bullshitters

Why would a good but aging goalkeeper who wants to make sure of being first choice for the national team come here when Gomes is in the best form he's had at Tottenham? Unless Redknapp promised him to be first choice, which would be ridiculous...

I'm pretty sure that 'Arry has come out and said that he wouldn't be in for James as couldn't see him wanting to be 2nd choice behind Gomes?

Would be a ridiculous signing unless he is happy bench-warming - Gomes is far superior and younger.

Loach I'm also pretty sure has said he wishes to remain at Watford for the time being and continue his football education there, although if their finances don't improve they may be forced to sell him and take the decision out of his hands.

I don't really want us to buy Loach either as would prefer he is somewhere that he has a chance of being first choice, England have a shortage of goalies and it's not good when a prem team takes a promising goalkeeper just to bench them continously.

Wouldn't mind the Spanish keeper we've been linked with, there doesn't appear to be too much faith in Walker and I'm not sure if he's actually been tested at Prem level.

James and Lewis wont want to be sitting on our bench for the next few months

James has his last chance to go to the world cup so will want first team action to establish himself back into the England fold.

Lewis had a late call up to an England squad at the end of last season (i think) he must be an outside chance of making that 3rd choice spot for the trip.
If he goes anywhere it will be for first team as well.

I can't see Posh letting Lewis leave in January as they are fighting relegation. He might leave in the summer. Like others have said I doubt James will come as he wants guaranteed games which he won't get at spurs (I hope). I think I would stick with Alnwick or Button when he comes back.

hope to g-d we dont get james. I cant see harry treating him like bentley and pav. He'll 100% get at least 10 games if he signs for us. All that BS about him being a great pro. So is gomes!

Alnwick simply isnt good enough. Some very good young keepers out there, like lewis, loach, westwood but the problem is at that age they would want to play and not simply stagnate. Seems the best way to get a promising young keeper as a backup is to graduate through the ranks.
