I just did a bit of Maffs and beleive it or not this number is our average goals for in the league for the past 9 seasons..

We are only 4.5555556 away for an average tally. The reason I bring this up as I we are quick to note that our forwards are not doing the business. But in truth our team has put in close the the usual number for a season.

The most in the 9 years was 67 last year and the worst was 45 the year before that.

49 2002
51 2003
47 2004
47 2005
53 2006
57 2007
66 2008
45 2009
67 2010
53.55555556

I wish to make 2 points.

1. We have never been as prolific as the normal top 3/4
2. I bet it will be WP that get the 0.5555556 goal

you off work these 3 days then?

Nope

I was just thinking that we had not scored much this season and I decided to find out what for us was a lot, and it appears that we are having a near average goal scoring season. Someone said that no one would have thought our forwards would have scored so few goals as this year. It appears last year was our best year ever in the league.

We have only scored more that 60 in the past 9 years twice and it was in recent seasons..

You your damn right so here is another stat
Goals scored by the fourth place team

2002 74 Newcastle
2003 68
2004 55
2005 45 Everton
2006 68
2007 63
2008 67
2009 68
2010 67
63.88888889

Now if we score approx 3 goals a game for the next 5 games and dont let any in .. I am willing to bet we will get 4th!!

Our biggest problem regarding goals scored has been the inability to convert chances. We have created more chances this year than I can remember, yet converted relatively little.

The games we should have won have often not been won because of failure to get that second killer goal. Not through lack of chances, but through a lack of clinical finishing.

West Brom - drew
West Ham - drew
Wolves - drew
Blackpool - lost
Man Utd - drew
Chelsea - drew
Birmingham - drew
Sunderland - drew
Everton - drew
West Brom - drew
Wigan - Lost
Man City - drew

Out of those 12 games and a possible 36 points we have claimed 10. We either bossed these games and didn't take our untold chances, or we threw away a lead. Either way, that is our problem this year. Not taking the chances we have created and therefore losing out on 24 points we could and probably should have had.

I agree and hence I stayed off the forums when we tied our last game, Closing out games are key to a top 4 position. I am going to say this but I was impressed by Shitties win the other night. Mancini instilled some patience into and impatient team. He may have been handed a gift with Tevez getting crooked. Last year we seemed to have the poise to close out games too! This year its been much more bombard the opposing team and try and put one away! I hope we learn for this and kick o next year with a clear objective to get into the top 4 .. Even if it is going to be even harder..

Before we get stuck into the idea that we haven't been as bad as we think we have, could I just ask you cusop. From those seasons, what proportion of our goals wer scored by players other than our strikers?

That is the key issue - not that we've not been productive, but that our strikers haven't been. Now, imagine what would have happened if one or two of our strikers had scored the 15-20 we would expect of them and we had the likes of Bale and VDV weighing with goals as well.

That my friend is the key point. We would seriously have been running Utd close to the title had 1, and only 1 striker got 15+ goals this season.

Damn I have dpressed myself :-(

Scary to imagine how many Bent would of scored this season for us playing ahead of VDV, not to mention the service he would of got from other areas.

He has his shortcomings, but fuck he knows where the net is.

Im not making many claims here I am just pointing to the facts and also the fact that our prowess in front of net is a recent event.. But here is one other stat..

Goals against

Yr F A
2002 74 52 Newcstle
2003 68 38
2004 55 37
2005 45 41 Everton
2006 68 31
2007 63 35
2008 67 28
2009 68 37
2010 67 41 Spurs
Average 37.77777778

Yes we need to score more but we also need to tighten up at the back but by not so much

Don't you start, you've been trying really hard the last couple of weeks

1. I do not believe in the I told you so philosophy.
2. Its obvious that the forwards have been as useful as sperm with no tail.
3. I dont get depressed by footy. Not when I have pets to abuse!

I think a more interesting stat is our goals to shots percentage. Currently it is 8.60% (49 goals / 570 shots). In fact only Sunderland, West Ham, Fulham and Wigan have worse percentages.

That is the reason why we won't finish 4th, especially as Man City have been so much more clincial than we have in front of goal, two more goals and over a hundred shots less!

Just imagine if we had one (or two) top class striker(s).

What if just 15 more had gone in!!

Thats 5 more a piece from Crouch, Defoe and Pav not too much to ask really

Well, if we could score at the same ratio as City we would have 13 more goals and an almost guaranteed top four finish.

Cannot argue with that Stat as they are on target for the right stats for a top 4 finish. Again I wa impressed by their performance against Blackburn
