Overheard a piece on the radio earlier that said that if arsenal finish 5th then that would mean that 7th place will get Europa league next term. I've done a quick google search which seems to confirm this scenario, anyone know for definite whether this is true? It would be an utter disaster as far as I'm concerned.

If you want to clutch at straws, I believe we are 3rd in the Fair Play League behind Liverpool and Arse. That will get us in also.

*edit. We are 4th. Also behind Everton. Still....

Surely if arsenal finish fifth Man Utd will get the second spot by finishing sixth and the third spot will go to the FA cup winners, probably Hull City.

TBH, I think we'll get sixth because United still have to play Southampton and Everton away and their home form hasn't exactly been inspiring

I really hope we get into one of the European competitions, its good worldwide exposure for our club and good ground work for our players to be able to interchange between to styles...don't understand why anyone would want out.

The players have to stand up to the challenge.

Diving and falling on the ground gets you at the top of the Fair Play League!!

I think the big problem with the EL is the group stages. We don't need the majority of our first team players to get through the group.

Save them for the knockout stages and I don't think we'll see the same issues.

Apparently if the arse win the cup and finish 5th, Europa League places will go down to 7th, so says The Times today.

No they've got that wrong. Europa only goes to 7th if both the FA Cup winner and runner up have already qualified, and this year Arsenal are the only semi finalist who look set to qualify via their league position. Piss poor journalism.

Had a read on premier league website. Fucking complicated but interpreted it as FA cup winner or runner up (which it will be one of, cos of teams left).

City qualified for Europe and runner up in league cup does not qualify, therefore 6th place will get.

Possible could get in by fair play if we are top but would need to be drawn out of hat against other fair play winners.

Really could do without a year in the Europa League. Such a distraction not worth having.
I keep changing my mind about this but I think it's worth bothering this time.

Three reasons:
- Winning it gets us into the CL, so we've technically got two cracks at it. Plus we should have a decent manager to help us.

- We have the squad to cope. It's just that AVB unnecessarily fielded our best players in the groups against shite teams. In fact, we need the EL to keep a lot of our players happy and fit through more game time.

-More prize money than you think. I believe we got £5m last year for reaching the QF. Not bad at all.

In that scenario we would be in the Europa with Arsenal and Man utd. Pretty good company. I hope we qualify. We arent good enough to believe it's a waste of time considering winning it would match our biggest achievement in 50 odd years.

As I said in my post above, this is the key point. And if we are planning on bringing through our young players, we should trust more of them to get through a group which, quite frankly, contains some teams that are barely championship level.

If we are going to win the CL then we need to gain as much experience as possible playing European football. Athletico Madrid have won it recently...we just need to do what they have done and we'll be well on our way.

Winning the EL next season qulifies you for the 2015/16 CL, is this at the expense of the fourth place team because with Arsenal and Utd in it I think a third place will be needed.
I can just see it; Spurs first and only club to finish fourth and not qualify as CL won by English club and then first and only club to finish fourth and fail to qualify as an English side wins EL.

No they've got that wrong. Europa only goes to 7th if both the FA Cup winner and runner up have already qualified, and this year Arsenal are the only semi finalist who look set to qualify via their league position. Piss poor journalism.

When the domestic cup winners also qualify for the Europa League through league position, their place through the league position is vacated. As a result, the highest-placed team in the league which have not yet qualified for European competitions qualify for the Europa League, with the Europa League qualifiers which finish above them in the league moved up one "place" if possible.

So if Arsenal win the FA Cup and finish in the top four, the runners up (Hull or Sheffield United) would get a EL spot. In this instance, the FA (domestic) Cup runners up place would be the 'lowest' EL entrant, and would go into the Third Qualifying Round. If Arsenal win the FA Cup and finish 5th, they would qualify as domestic cup winners and go straight into the Group Stage, and the other place would go to league positions. In that case, whoever finishes 6th would take the league route and enter at the Play-off Round, and 7th would take the place of the League Cup entrant (as Man City will be in the CL) and enter at the Third Qualifying Round.

If that makes sense.
