Living legend
That record will stand forever, as I think the average number of Tests played per year is going to decline dramatically. It already is, and I think a turnaround is out of the question. We're only playing six Test matches in total this year, 2010. Compared to eleven in 2009 IIRC.
Anyway the record couldn't belong to a better man, a wonderful person, shining example and an outstanding talent. And it couldn't have been sealed in more dramatic fashion! I was annoyed when he announced his retirement ahead of the first Test, thinking it didn't give him enough chance of reaching 800, but 8 wickets in his final Test including a five-for was a fitting finale. It was quite emotional to follow live too, all the nerves as the available wickets ran low, and there was a sweet moment when the Indians were on their last wicket and there was a run-out referral and the whole crowd cheered as the decision went against Sri Lanka! And they showed Murali's missus laughing. Heart warming stuff.
Murali is up there with the very greatest names in the history of sport
