In which case we have wasted £26 million on a penalty taker because he'll get zero service, just like yesterday with Townsend one side and Lennon the other. Townsend generally has one thing one his mind, I'm Gareth Bale I must shoot.
He is learning. AVB had a word on Thursday and since then he has stopped wandering to centre forward and running into the middle of the pitch with the ball every time. He is now staying wide and is attacking on the outside. An inverted winger is hopeless if the defender knows he won't go outside him. Lennon on the left is a doddle to defend against, Townsend cutting in from the right all the time the same but if a defender knows you can do both he has a problem.
I've not been a Townsend fan on the right but if he will continue to attack on the outside then he has promise, when he learns to cross along the floor to Soldado against Premier League defences he'll be even better. He can't improve his decision making without game time of course and no doubt he'll enjoy another outing on Thursday.
Nowhere near the finished article but he has upped his game considerably in the last year so credit where credit is due.
Whether you think that or not, it's clearly the way our manager wants us to play. At the end of the day, he's in charge. If he decides Lennon doesn't fit, it's perfectly right he should be considered for sale.
