I wonder what a new poll would look like if done now.

72.5% of this forum wanted to sign him last January, that's a really high number for an average player. Just wonder if fans have higher expectations now on the quality of players we should be bringing into this squad, or if the fascination with this "chaos creator" is still there. lol

Let's see...

If we can not get our primary target i think he would be fine as a 6th choice. I am also curious if he can raise his game with better players around him. Not a bad option at all.

Better off keeping Gil than going for some of the names suggested who are either not good enough or don’t fit the position we need.

Start of the window was great but this latter part has been pretty poor. You’d think we were in the Europa Conference League with most of the names being suggested.
I'd wager this will be the outcome with Gil staying put as our 5th/6th option on the basis nobody of merit was available or realistically attainable.

It goes without saying, quality over quantity and not buying for the sake of buying leaving us lumbered in similar scenarios to what we've faced with Lo Celso, Ndombele etc.

If I'm not allowed to ask this then tell me and I'll get back into my box! But just to check where we are up to.

Traore is an option but there is also an unnamed top target who's name hasn't hit the media yet? And careasco was a maybe but would maybe depend on an out happening/other things falling into place.

Is that right or have I got my ITK wires crossed! Apologies again if it's not the dine thing to ask. Thanks for all the info and great work
You're right you aren't allowed to ask questions but on this one off I'll answer purely because I was going to post it anyway.......

We are currently looking at a number of options to bring the numbers up. There is still a possibility of a couple more leaving yet and that will have a bearing which way we go. As for "top targets" I literally have no idea now. There are a couple of players that imo are better options than others, but outright ability isn't the only thing to consider. We'd like one to be HG, and that could change the way we go in another area and vice versa.

Lots of players being spoken to so "interest is there" how much interest is debatable though, and I'm sure there are others we enquired about that I/we haven't even heard let alone hit the media.

Think that was because we wanted him as a RWB, before we signed Spence, and before we saw improvement from both Doherty and Emerson.

For me he's the type of player you keep on your list in case all else fails, but even then I'd only be looking to loan him(with a small fee) with an option of a contract next year.

I just get the feeling we have set our sights much higher now, and giving this guy a 3-4 year contract will cause us the same issues next Summer, as we've had with so many this year we can't get rid of. If he came in on loan and his numbers improved then we could look to use that option. if he didn't there would be no long term commitment and he'd just leave and be a freebie for someone else.

Either way he's just one of a number of players we are considering right now, so no need to lose our shit just yet.
Is it really that important we get games for Gil than replace him with Traore? If he stays here he would play a fair bit this season. I can understand it if we were constrained by HG but that doesn't appear to be the case if we're trying to replace him with Traore. It would probably cost us £5m or so to loan him for the season (even then I can't see Wolves accepting that - I think it would have to be permanent for £10m ish).

Traore wouldn't be a disastrous signing but is he significantly better than Gil to be worth creating new puzzles for us to solve?

I think Gil is a bit of an irrelevance for this season. It seems he’s not ready to make a real impact in the Prem yet.

I think a player like Gil needs rhythm and proper minutes for his development, though. Not dribs and drabs off the bench with the occasional cup game thrown in. I think we'd only shoot ourselves in the foot by stunting his development if we keep him around as it's abundantly clear Conte doesn't really fancy him and he probably wouldn't get consecutive starts all season.

With Traore, you pretty much know what you're going to get and he's been a bench/rotation player in the Prem for years now. Highly doubt he'd be a revelation or start many games, but he's someone Conte will be happy to throw on and we know that, on his day, he can cause chaos and change games at this level.

Personally, while I like Gil, I think having Traore on loan for a year as a 6th/7th choice forward and wildcard option off the bench is defo preferable to all but wasting a season of Gil's development.

I really hope we don't sign Traore outright, though. As Trix said, he's not someone we want clogging up the squad for years to come.

Agree a permanent deal isn't ideal but can't see Wolves accepting a loan with a favourable fee for us, so now i'm just hoping we don't replace Gil with Dan James.

I guess we could do it on appearances maybe where an option is triggered. E.g Wolves get a decent fee if he plays 25-30 times for us this season and he gets a 2-3 year contract with us.

Buying him is exactly what Conte meant when he said the club need to be smarter in the market. It goes against everything he has said so far. We’ve made too many mistakes in previous windows and it’s why I’m not convinced we will buy traore or get james in.

I don’t understand why we don’t look at Sarr from Watford? Plays RW, fee isn’t that ridiculous. Much prefer him over James or Adama

He has had two moves fall apart this summer. Something must be going on with the finances with him for that to happen. Might be a reason why?

Is he better right now than Gil… imo yes so should we get him in on loan if we can… absolutely. We all know his issyes but if we can get him dribbling well that’s all we need, he needs to create space and him feeding our attack will see him get more assists.

Well he’s significantly more suited to Conte’s way of playing and physical profile of player for sure.

I would hope for better ( i.e Zaha), but I can’t see that happening for various reasons, so although I won’t be doing cartwheels if he signs I can see why we would be interested considering our system and the way we play.

I hope its only baby oil he rubs on his arms, my vote is no and his contract at Wolves ends in the summer, just not convinced

I can’t believe he’s only 26, seems to have been around forever!
Could he do a job as RWB? Yes, did he not have a few arguments with his boss about being deployed in that role though?
Could he play RF? Most certainly.
He’s got the tools, the only thing lacking is goal output which if he’s playing as a RWB I’m not so worried about.
Yes he’ll create space with teams doubling up on him but Kulu does that already now.

He's a good player but I would only want a loan. I feel that a better option will be there next year. Keep an eye on the contract situation with Zaha, Maddison and Zaniolo as they could be available next year.
