Adebayor chant, just plain wrong! yeah, the threads still going

This thread is hilarious. Everyone's standing firmly by their guns, playing devil's advocate till the cow's come home.

The simple fact is that the chant IS racist, it's just whether that bothers you or not. Seriously, you can't argue that it's not racist – the chant is based purely on Adebayor coming from Africa, and that is the only way it is funny, so is in fact entirely focused on his race and its stereotypical quirks. And yes, calling Lee 'Bruce' and 'Noodles' and whatever is very much racist too.

It doesn't offend me at football games because I've heard a lot worse and I expect a lot worse, and playing on racial/sexual/geographical stereotypes can be amusing (however guiltily), but I certainly wouldn't join in singing.

This sums it up perfectly for me, Yes it is racist and sometimes some sterotypes can be slightly amusing but personally I wouldn't choose to get involved as its not the sort of humour I find funny. Plus the song sounded shit in the clips posted so why bother ?

We are not a small time club who learn all there chants off soccer am, i hate that bloody "easy, Easy, EASY" chant too, but we are Tottenham Hotspur a club who have a fantastic song book that is the envy of many-a-club in the British Isles. To pick that apart, I'd say they were invented "terms" deliberately meant to cause offence.

"Your dad washes Elephants" was also created to cause offense. If not, why was it used? As a bit of filler to a crescendo of "your mum's a whore"? Brilliant. Glad we got Andrew Lloyd Webber to compose the piece, would have turned out shite otherwise. It's completely unfunny, so that argument's out the window. I know it's Adebayor, i hate him as much as the next person. But, i'm sorry, if you find it that funny, i think you need to get out there and expose yourself to proper comedy. Or even chants that are actually funny.

"Your dad works on a coffee plantation" would have been more correct (my granddad worked on one, no problem with that), but the intent behind it would still have to be questioned. Why mention it other than to denigrate.

It just reeks of a knuckle-dragger's rent-a-song to me. Don't know any real profession an African might be in for us to denigrate. Can't say Elephant-jockey, that'll raise too many eyebrows. So, we'll just make one up. Elephant washer. Yeah, ha, that's funny.

Well, the Adebayor chant is more likely to offend a greater number of people, rather than just its intended victim, as it is racially offensive.

The Wenger chant will cause massive offense to its intended victim (well probably did, once, i'm sure he's over it now) but is unlikely to offend anyone else.

Paedophile, rapist and murderer, of course, but I am white and therefore would have no idea how offensive the other words can be, and wouldn't pretend to.

My point is that 'Wenger is a paedophile' only targets him. The Adebayor chant will offend a greater number of people. And that is it. I'm not condoning or admonishing either.
