Atletico Madrid forward Sergio Aguero has asked the Spanish club to release him from his contract.
The 22-year-old Argentine international extended his deal to 2014 in January but his buy-out clause was reduced from £52m to £40m.
"After five intense years a stage in my personal development has ended and I have to move on to a new one," said Aguero on his website.
Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham have been linked to Aguero.
"I said long ago that when I wanted to go, I would say so publicly," added the Atletico striker. "And the time has come.
"So I keep to my word and here I am. I find it hard to leave Atletico. It hurts and saddens me."
Aguero has scored over 100 goals for Atletico since joining from Independiente as a teenager in 2006.

I know he is a big name player but is he really what we need ? Can he play upfront with VdV or are you suggesting he replaces VdV ?

His wages and transfer fee would be close to 70m plus he would never come to us. Torres and aguero upfront for chelski next year I think

ok, say we get him and he is brilliant... how long before he wants to move on again to a bigger club?

I'd just love to see us get in early and get our targets instead of waiting until two minutes before the window closes. I wasnt really suggesting we sign him, he's an awesome player and I just wanted to share the news with those who might want us to sign him...

wills: If we get him and he's brilliant, then we will win the prem. Why would he want to move on?

bizness: Probably :(

I think the plan is if we get him and he is that good that he won't need to move anywhere else?!

Plus it won't be a 70M transfer fee, he has a buy out clause that was just lowered in January to 40M, so worst case scenario that is the fee.

Whether he wants to come to us and whether we can offer him the wages he would like is of course a different matter.

I could see City trying to sign him in order to replace Tevez, who I still see as wanting a move abroad.

Isnt the buy-out clause only relevant to Spanish clubs anyway? We wouldnt necessarily have to pay 40m

Even if we were in the CL next season this would be a major long shot, as things stand now this has no chance of happening.

World class striker and would be great I am sure, although I agree he is more of the player to play in the VDV position than with VDV (although I suggest two players of such quality would make it work)

Not gonna happen though so pointless discussing how he would fit in.

If I was given a straight swap between Aguero and Falcao, it would be Falcao every time.

Aguero would be 1.too expensive and 2.would mean changing our set up to accommodate him.

Falcao would slot straight in and cost less IMO.

These are the type of transfers we should stay away from because we have no chance of getting him and we will waste weeks upon weeks waiting for him to sign but he won't.
He will use us to get a better offer from a bigger team of his preference who pay the big bucks!

Exactly my thoughts, we're far better off deciding on a couple of options and getting them signed up ASAP so they can join in with a full pre-season. I know it devalues the players we want to sell a bit, but it strengthens the team and gives us a proper chance of starting well next season.

Chasing all these pipe dreams is a waste of everyone's time.

One day, this thread can be merged with the inevitable thread on him in the TR forum.

He's going CL, probably Chelsea or Real IMO.

His buyout clause is no longer an issue now that he has said that he wants to leave and told the club to listen to offers.
