100%doesn’t that just sum up how we operate. We need Mane but it’s a bit over the fee/wage price point so we back out then put the money to a player in a completely unrelated position.
it’s not about what we need it’s about the market opportunity. That ain’t ever going to help us win trophies.
But Mane plays on the left so it's still going for another in a different position. Same with going for Diaz for that side and getting Kulusevski for the opposite. It's just about opportunity when it comes up. It's more about the value in a deal than a player to fit a particular position. Like if Scott came up cheaper than a centre back we would probably get him and 1 CB rather than 2 CBs like we need. That just wouldn't surprise me.A deal that happened to be for a pacey winger. It was only after Sissoko had failed in the RWF positon that he transitioned into playing the box-to-box CM role for us.
Yes there was an element of opportunism to the deal but it’s also accurate that Sissoko was, in practice, the cheaper alternative to Poch’s preferred option at the main position we were attempting to strengthen that summer.
The same general dynamic has played out repeatedly. Look no further than our current CB conundrum where we brought in Rodon as the cheap alternative to Skriniar and Lenglet as a stopgap loan instead of Bastoni/Bremer.
We’re never going to land the manager’s top choice at every position but our alternatives have been woefully inadequate.
Levy’s obsession with getting “good value” on a deal rather than paying what it takes to get the right players with the right attributes to thrive in the manger’s setup has cost us time and time again, yet nothing seems to ever change.

Could probably contribute more than we've seen from Ndombele this year. I'd say he'll be in one of those advanced slots so could prob come on when Maddison tired to keep the press and momentum going. Doubt he'd start this year.If we buy Alex Scott would this be a loan back or is he good enough to compete for a place? Doesn’t seem like a high priority given we are stacked in the middle.
I don’t want to continue derailing this thread any further after this post, but it’s not true that Mane was exclusively a left winger in those days. According to Transfermarkt he made 21 appearances on the right across all competitions in his final season at Southampton and 29 appearances on the right in his first season at Liverpool. Son also played on both sides more frequently back then so Poch may well have been indifferent as to which side the new pacey wide man would play on.But Mane plays on the left so it's still going for another in a different position. Huh? Utd have bought a bloke who has got 9 top flight goals in his entire career.Guaranteed our 'right price' will be a lot less than the selling club's valuation.
We will never be the big club that pays that little bit more to ensure we sign the player that we want. Tottenham, under Levy, will be out at all the Sunday morning car boot sales, hoping to find a bargain.
Liverpool - we need a top CB to take us to the next level - VDV
Man Utd - we really need a CF to compete, as if by magic, there's a offer that can't be refused on Atalanta's doorstep.
Tottenham - let's try and haggle, with figures miles apart in valuation for months on end, only to fail, miss out, and leave everyone short.
Big club structure, small club attitude to recruitment.
United went from Cavani to Weghorst and now to Hojlund (who has 12 senior goals). Not sure they're a great scenario of moving quickly to replace that position.Guaranteed our 'right price' will be a lot less than the selling club's valuation.

I'm sure we'd have got that or more if we'd been selling Kane to that Barcelona five years ago too.Huh? Utd have bought a bloke who has got 9 top flight goals in his entire career.
Liverpool got lucky when barca gave them a stupid amount of money for there star player that they then spent, its more like if we sold kane then bought a couple of players. But a lot of people on here are calling for our star player to be sold for 40 plus million less than coutinho went for nearly 5 years ago
Ange seems to have been impressed with Sarr, so he seems like the young CM we should be focusing on for now. Scott is significantly less proven (his experience is at a lower level than Sarr's) and is only 11 months younger than Sarr. Although I'd have no objections to Scott being added to the squad, I'd prefer that £35m was spent on a CB.I’m at an odd point when it comes to CM’s. On the one hand I’d be very happy to see us bring in young talents with big potential like Scott or Veiga, I’ve been wanting us to do it for a long time and it’s a philosophy that has worked well for us in the past.
On the other tho, even if PEH goes do we really have room for another CM. Do we actually need one?
Bentancur is supposedly a lot closer to coming back than we had assumed apparently and Devine has barely had a look in. With the resurgence of Lo Celso and the current performance of Sarr would Scott, or whoever we brought in, actually get much game time? I guess if we had Europe it make more sense but as is I’m not sure.
If we do end up with Scott or Veiga i obviously won’t be disappointed as I rate both. Part of me wonders if Scott has/will come back into the picture because he’s HG and both defenders and forward we are looking at with the Kane money aren’t. Plus we have been priced out of a move for Gallagher if they want 45-50 mil so maybe Scott is seen as a sensible HG move. But all in all I’m just not sure if it’s needed as we could just give his minutes to Devine.
If he's someone we want, and we get outbid, then yeah, super lameeven Bournemouth can outbid us, pathetic

We're obviously not in for this guy.even Bournemouth can outbid us, pathetic
