"Very interested" according to Fox in the RO.

Should have pulled the trigger in the winter, wouldn't be having many of our problems we're having now :meh: Delighted Poch has at least verbally confirmed recognition of the problem.

According to reports, we tried to.

I wonder if this means we have given up on Depay (maybe he was CL dependent) or if we are considering letting Chadli go.

According to reports, we tried to.

According to others, we made contact, but didn't follow through. This would also line up with ITK since saying that Mitchell and Co said it would be better not to buy a winger in January but wait until the summer. I've no doubt if we actually had made the offer, he'd have bitten. It was a poor decision on our part to pass it up, as the extra investment would have been well worth it IMO.

Or one of the wingers on the other side.

Or my my own personal preference, which I'm sure is unlikely, that Chadli would be moved primarily to striker to save funds for other positions this summer. I will be very disappointed if that lad leaves Spurs and isn't given a proper shot at striker before he goes.

According to reports in France, we were in "advanced talks" and "despite Tottenham’s best attempts, Ayew wouldn’t arrive until the end of the season".

Ayew has never played on right, Depay has only played a handful of games there (and the last time was 2-3 years ago), so I don't think either would be brought in for the right side and I would be surprised if we moved Chadli there.

If we do go for Ayew, I think it is because we have given up on Depay.

Right, but that's then conflicting reports from the media, with ITK coinciding with the later-written reports. I'm not saying necessarily for certain that it's one way or the other, but personally I choose to believe the more likely coincides with a source I value more than any media outlet: Trix. Combine this with the fact Levy would also have undoubtedly preferred we wait until the player was free, and for me the evidence is overwhelmingly against just a few media reports in France.

All true, and I agree that what you say is the most plausible explanation, I'm just throwing out other possibilities. Would honestly not be surprised to see Poch at least try Ayew on the right anyway occasionally to maintain inverteds on both sides, but nonetheless you're probably right that we simply view our chances at Depay as minimal at best (which is sensible IMO). I do have a sneaking hunch we may be priming to sell Lamela this summer, which is of relevance. I still think it unlikely, but I wouldn't have even though it a possibility as recently as a couple months ago. Recent lineups/events though have me considering the possibility.

Hell, if I were in charge, I'd get both Ayew and Kono for free this summer and be done with it, and then save the funds for other positions/paying off the stadium ASAP.

Fair enough, what did Trix say? I don't recall anything and couldn't find anything in the RO relating to Ayew (from any ITK). Also can't find anything in the media other other than rehashes of the "reports from France" and the latest very vague reports the seem to all come from the Daily Star's report.

I honestly can't find the ITK bit so take it fwiw, and it didn't pertain to Ayew specifically, but it stated that we were open to possible transfers at winger but decided under encouragement from Mitchell to wait for players available in the summer.

So it's my impression we made contact, and then ultimately decided to wait, rather than making a bonafide offer that he refused. I don't think he would have turned us down.

Ironically that is the same French Source that in the middle of Jan said we were in "Advanced Talks" & "despite Tottenham’s best attempts, Ayew wouldn’t arrive until the end of the season".

Yeah, media wankery.

Well, can't know for sure, but I suspect we just backed out and decided to wait. If we were actively pursuing a winger in the window, I'd be surprised if we had only gone for one in the middle of January and then called it quits.

Seems to be a taller, quicker more skillful player in the Defoe mould. So long as he can stay onside he is definitely worth a punt..;)

Weren't we trying for Mirallas as well?

Fair, but how hard did we actually try? Do you think it would have progressed any further than inquiring, in response to a Lennon loan, and then Everton saying no?

If we actively wanted a winger, we'd have gotten one. I suspect we probed around a bit to explore several possibilities, but ultimately hardly made any genuine attempts and decided to wait until the summer.

Maybe, I'm not ITK so I'm not going to pretend I know what we're up to, but we were also supposedly trying to pry that Dutch one out of the Eredivisie as well.

Also it's the time of the year where you really need a seller as teams will often just flat out turn you down because here often fighting for something.

Isn't Ayew left footed, though? Given Pochettino's love for inverted wingers, I'd be very surprised if we didn't at least try to play him on the right.

Seems to score well enough coming down the left flank though so who knows.

He didn't have a left footed attacker at soton, if he was desperate for 1 he had a couple of windows to address it but didn't

We may be interested but I'd be a bit surprised if we can pull him considering Marseilles are most likely playing UCL ball next season, his family is in France and he adores Bielsa. I particularly do not buy that he would be interested in heading to Inter right now. I think the media are making more of it than there actually is, but would be happy to be wrong about him coming to us!
