With regards to the 'could he change his views' point. In my direct experience, albeit a lot longer than 4 years ago, yes of course views can change.
As a kid, anything branded "gay" was a derogatory thing. The term itself was quite literally, fighting talk. If someone was a 'fag' (don't hear it anymore, do you?) Or a 'queer' fists would soon follow, or it would be a way of putting someone down. God knows what that sort of attitude did to anyone that was actually gay. But of course, as you leave school, enter the wide world you realise, that stuff was said and done at school because it is naive in the extreme and ignorant beyond belief. Young people make stupid comments. Always have always will. Because they haven't experienced real life fully or had their small world's challenged. Social media just advertises it more.
