That's bollocks.... More likely that he was axed for returning for pre-season training looking like the Michellin man! Combine that with the fact he's 2nd highest earner and there's more justification for getting rid of him.

If it was related to number 17 then it would be prime candidate for unfair dismissal and the PFA would be all over it.

That's a load of rubbish, surely. Not the 17 bit, it is unlucky in Italy, whereas 13 is lucky. 13 was always my preferred shirt number when playing football (and no, I'm not a sub goalie), and I'd flat out refuse to wear 17. My dad's date of birth is the 17th and he's always been a bit of an unlucky fucker. He has me as a son for starters.

The issue goes back to Cellino’s time in Italian football when he says there was only one occasion in 20 years that Cagliari won or drew a game on the 17th of a month.
