This is just ridiculous mate.
Of course we all want to see success, and of course we want to see the club progress. And no-body is "defending" the window, there are just a fair few of us who don't see it as a complete disaster, and still won't if we sign nobody.

A "farce of a window" or a "shit show" would be selling our best players and replacing them with rubbish, and we've seen far too many windows like that. This doesn't look like one of them.

Some of us are actually going to enjoy where we're at, because let me tell you, for most of my time supporting Spurs I didn't even dream we would be in a position like this- great players, a world-class club-grown striker, a manager who oozes class, challenging at the top of the league, regularly in the CL, one of the best stadiums in the world about to be finished...

Of course we all want to see Spurs win things. But there was a time when it looked like the club might cease to exist, there was a time we were relegated, there were times when we never had more than a single quality player at the club, there were times when we were managed by complete idiots... I'll take where we're at now and be fucking grateful for it.

If you think that an inactive transfer window is a bad thing, that's your prerogative. But to accuse other people of holding sanctimonious views because they don't whine like spoilt children about it is a bit much.

I've lived through the times you've mentioned, that's why when an opportunity like this comes along we have to grab it. We can't act like we're in the throes of impending doom when we're not. Now is the time.
Some of you seem contented to be a nearly man club forever. When will some of you forgo this madness of next season we'll be a step closer bollocks, and just think fuck it let's just go balls deep THIS SEASON, and just try.
This spin doctory bullshit of finacial austerity because of the stadium or someother such crap irks me. We've been frugal for years. The banks know that unless some unforseen catasptrophic event occurs, Tottenham will always be able to pay back it's loan. We've got plenty money we just refuse to take ANY risks. It's embarassing.
What would you call someone who sits on their high horse and insults people with a different viewpoint. To me that's sanctimonious.
Spoit children.....embarrasing.

It's understandable that this sort of situation carries on for the next 3 or 4 years but after that if we still don't spend this kind of money then the new stadium almost becomes redundant in terms of on the pitch progress.
We'll be closer, but still as a disadvantage compared to the top teams mainly due to commercial revenue.

United: £276m
City: £218m
Chelsea: £140m
Liverpool: £136m
Arsenal: £91m
Tottenham: £73m

With high ticket revenue, we'll probably be close to but not quite at parity with Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal on overall turnover. However, we will still be at a disadvantage mainly because of stadium costs - and a lot will come down of course to whether we're in the Champions League or not. We'll also still be miles behind Manchester United, and you have to think they'll stop underachieving at some point.

Whilst I agree with your overall sentiments I think selling the deadwood may not be as easy as this.

If players are sat on the balance sheet as assets then their value is amortised over 5 years.
If we sell them this amount left would have to be written off against the transfer fee.

Take Sissoko. We buy him for £30 million and amortise £6 million a season so he's now an 'asset' worth £18 million.
If we sell him for £15 million, I suspect, we don't have £15 million towards another player but a loss of £3 million.

Whereas players like Rose and Dembele have zero value as they have been here a long time. As a result selling them would be all profit.

Not 100% on this as I'm no accountant but this is how it works for several of the bigger companies I have worked for in regards to assets.
Close, but no banana.
Transfer fees are ammortised over the length of the contract - not necessarily 5 years (I used that as an example previously). What you are referring to is an accounting loss, which is what is relevant for FFP (in particular Villa's situation) as it relates to a single year.

Whereas, the financial reality is very different from that for normal clubs - whilst you can make a book loss on sale, in reality you would rather have the deadwood off the books over the longer period. This is why financial planning is important as you may be trying to work within different restrictions depending on the purpose - Villa need profits on sale to hit a financial deadline, whereas most clubs work on a longer plan as they don't have FFP breathing down their necks.

Also JJ said this. Not sure if it’s opinion so posting it here rather than the main thread:

“We are finally in position to push on but clubs are just not selling players & agents are being dishonest plus players agree we think done then the agents are still touting same player on the market & we don’t do deal like that - terrible market”

Ah, so it's going to be one of those "we tried, honest" deadline days then.

As Spurs fans essentially we all want the same thing but some of us are able to practice emotional control and not throw our toys out of the pram whenever we don’t get what we want, maybe worth a try?

No. This isn't zen community. I'm pissed because I can see a great chance at success being handled so terribly, therefore I need a place to vent and I like doing it here.

I'm intrigued as to why most ITK's thought we'd be spending circa 150 million at the start of the window.

Now I know transfers are complex and difficult at the best of times, and of course things change...however, it doesn't look like we're prepared to spend anything like that.

Seems like a remarkable shift in intentions.

I don't really believe it, but it has been said that clubs put out positive, but false info around season ticket renewal time to make sure the uptake is good. Once that's done business as usual.
fans of other clubs have complained of similar. I just don't really think positive or negative info would truly affect renewals, but that's one theory.

Agents would be far better served pushing players towards EPL, as the finances are far greater. Once the window closes and the other European leagues kick in, the money on offer will be less, as the European clubs look to rake advantage of the cash rich English teams being out of the market.
