Think he's shafted both ourselves and the Chavs this season with shitty decisions, should be interesting then....

Referee chosen for Tottenham Hotspur's League Cup final with Chelsea

Anthony Taylor has been given the honour of refereeing the League Cup final between fierce London rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea on Sunday, March 1 at Wembley Stadium.

Taylor has refereed Spurs matches on three occasions this season and was involved in controversy when he awarded a penalty to Crystal Palace for Benjamin Stambouli’s tackle on Joe Ledley which appeared to be legitimate in their 2-1 defeat.

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino and Taylor also have history after the Argentine heavily criticised some of his decision making when he was manager of Southampton in their 3-2 defeat to Spurs last season.

Taylor started refereeing in the North Premier League before making his debut in the Football League in 2006 in the match between Wrexham and Peterborough.

From there his career has gone from strength to strength and he was given his first opportunity in the Premier League when he took charge of Fulham’s 1-0 victory over Portsmouth in 2010.

It will be Taylor’s first chance at officiating in a major final and he will be assisted by Lee Betts and Dave Bryan, while Craig Powson will assume fourth official duties.

So a relatively inexperienced ref that can be easily intimidated and manipulated by Mourinho and the rest of those Chelsea *****. Just the way Jose would like it. :banghead:

It was him who completely caved into the Palace fans/media Pardew narrative and gave them three points against us. One of the weakest referees in the league and I cannot understand how he has been deemed to have earned the chance to referee a cup final.

He also called up mourinho to apologise for not giving them that penalty against Southampton this season.

It's not a great appointment for us!

Really should be someone more experienced like Phil Dowd, who won't take any intimidating crap. I know some of you don't like him, but I'm just thinking of the mental strength factor.

Couldn't of picked a worse one if we tried.

Why is he deserving of refereeing this? I was hoping for Dowd. At least he won't be bullied into decisions.

Taylor will relent to the Chelsea pressure, you can guarantee it.

So not only are we at a disadvantage because of the Europa League three days before, we now have a weak ref when we know Chelsea are the worst team in the league for pressurising officials.

Agree. Although, looking on the bright side at least it's not Chris Foy.

This is why tomorrow night has to also be played like a cup final. We need a 2/3-0 win, simple as that.

We can then be very wise with our squad in the second leg and have fresh defenders - especially - for Wembley as I can already smell a chelsea pen with this guy.

We've had a nice rest; we go out all guns blazing and drill them down and lock down the tie tomorrow.

We will never lock down a tie in one game. We couldn'T even do that against Sheffield United at home. Look what happened to the 3-0 lead we too kat WHL against Inter Milan.
But anyway I'd rest a few in the second leg as well. We have to gamble.

To Anthony Taylor. Let's wait and see first. Give him a chance. But I agree with Phil Dowd as the best possibility.

We still went through... I would take the same against Fiorentina as long as we go through...Wouldn't make for great watching but would be effective.

We have to go out and try and do that.

Or just accept the chelsea game is super stacked against us.

We manage things properly though and we'll win at wembley.

I am shocked by this. How is he deserving of this? He's been under scrutiny ALL season. It makes NO sense.

I haven't noticed Anthony Taylor being either especially brilliant or especially rubbish this season, mainly because I don't tend to pay all that much attention to individual referees in general: they're usually just the generic bastard-in-the-black / lifesaver-with-a-whistle through my eyes when I'm watching games. Therefore I don't have an opinion one way or the other about him refereeing the final, because I haven't paid him enough attention to do so.

Having said all that, if that article in the OP is flagging up the Stambouli penalty incident at Palace in particular, I personally wouldn't give any ref a hard time at all for giving that, especially in real time without the benefit of slow motion replays. The fault in that particular case was FAR more Stambouli's brainfart than it was a refereeing error, regardless of whether or not Stambouli got the tiniest sliver of the ball. If the same thing had happened in the other box I would have been baying for a penalty, and I bet that most of SpursCommunity would have been doing exactly the same.
