Some times I do not understand us spurs fans being average for the last 15 years apart from the year we almost got 4th we shower praises on average players doing their jobs such as your steed's, Taino's, Brown's and Freund's. While player with class like Carrick it took almost a year after his debut to get any recognition, the same goe for Kanoute. We seem to like rubbish player's who try their hardest.

Malbranque gets almost as many votes for Player of the Season as Berbatov. That says it all.

Thats the English mentality, we love a scrapper, an underdog, a plucky loser with mud on his face. If someone is talented we get scared that they'll turn out to be crap and dash our hopes of glory, thats why my mate hates Cristiano Ronaldo for his 'stupid hair'.

But thats what makes us a gloriously pessimistc nation, WE ARE ENGLAND! and people that are different frighten us!

no if anything we're unrealistic of our stature in football. I mean Quaresma? Sneijder? Robben? come on!

It took the media a year to recognise Carrick. I think it was safe to say most on here realised it from the word off.

As for Kanoute, he had 1 good game in 4. His control was outstanding, in fact I'd say he rivals Berbatov for bringing a ball down out of the air with his amazingly high chest leaps and control. But he was inconsistent.

Sometimes the consistent battler is what you need, and for me, anyone that puts in 100% and visibly so, will always do well in my book.

everyone loves a player who plays with their heart on their sleeve and tries their hardest, and that is not only the english.

i know countless real madrid fans who loved beckham because he worked hard for the team (especially towards the end) and almost always gave his all. people appreciate that.

many fans here seem to expect 4th will/would come naturally (not necessarily now, but certainly pre season) whilst the fact that we discuss the booing of players as often as we do suggests that we actually have pretty high expectations and are not used to average

Psychologically, those who work harder seem to love the club and thus its fans a bit more. So, it's normal the likes of Steed and Tainio, Keane recently, to be favourites of some parts of the crowd.

Last season Berbatov was player of the season, so one cannot generalise really that Spurs' fans like average rather than flair players.

I wish steed would have this kind of ratio.

Spurs fans are well known for loving players with flare

Berbati - it's pretty complex.

Spurs are the club of Glenn Hoddle & David Ginola - pure footballing geniuses. And of Dave MacKay - a genuine tough man. In my lifetime though, we've never had an out-and-out thug like Tommy Smith (who once trod on Ossie Ardiles and was then flattened by Ricky Villa) or Ron "Chopper" Harris. And we've had plenty of "gentlemen" defenders - players who were so talented and fair-minded that they rarely fouled the opposition - eg Gary Mabbutt & Ledley King.

With a genius like Ginola, Hoddle or Berba, the problem is that we fans know how good they are. And we want them to perform to that very high level every time they step on the pitch. And if they're having a bad day, then we want to see them showing commitment: sliding into tackles, running around like madmen.

Berba isn't that kind of player. However, especially since Ramos joined and he's been playing a more linking role, a little deeper than Keane, I think he has worked tremendously hard for the team. And he has had some fantastic games for us.

Berba is a genius in the great Spurs tradition. And I think most fans recognize that.

Look man, last season I literally used to call Malbranque, "Malwank" as he was so frustrating. But since Ramos' arrival, he has been consistently good.

He obviously doesn't have the class of Berbatov, but his commitment to the cause is second to none. Compared to Berbatov, who I've only seen Berbatov hustle and bustle defenders once, and that was in the Carling Cup Final.

I think for Berbatov's own selfishness, he has to leave Spurs and play at the highest level, as his skill set demands that. He is without doubt one of the best forward players in the world, and I bet you he would be hustling every defender, if he played for one of the top 4 (ManYoo especially) or he would be dropped.

We still have the majority of the team that finished a very credible fifth twice sitting at eleventh. In reality I think our team/squad is far too brittle to be considered anything better than above average (a couple apart). We have plenty of good pros who can play at squad level. First team wise our midfield lacks so much punch since Carrick left. If Carrick had stayed we'd be ok and sitting top half at least. He made Lennon into a potent threat by releasing him at the right times. I also consider finishing fifth last year a fluke. Well, it was the relatively unknown brilliance of Berbatov.

So while we are underachieving this season, I don't think we've gotten used to average - rather I believe we've overachieved in getting fifth when we were really top 6 and no better. I reckon if Arnesen had stayed, Jol would have flourished no problem and we'd have broken into the top 4 such was their understanding. That coupled with the fact Jol had wanted to build a team round Carrick.

However as I see it now Juande Ramos wears the trousers in the relationship with Comolli so he gets to mould the team as he likes it. If he is really as astute as he seems (tactically especially) then we can continue to improve and regain our place in top 6 (our current level) and maybe challenge top 4 in next 2 years maybe. From what I've seen Ramos has a tendency to bring out the best in seemingly average players, so give him 2 years or so to mould his vision and we should reap the rewards. Hopefully.
