Just having a chat down the boozer with some Gooners, West ham and United fans. One thing that startled me, is I found myself constantly having to big our players up. Even the West Ham fans think they have better players than us.

I know its ok to have opinions but surely, bearing in my mind we finished 5th (again) and got to a cup final, our players are just underrated?

Vertonghen, Rose, Bentaleb, Lamela, Dier, Chadli and fuck me, even Harry Kane were all criticized. One west ham fan even said he'd have Adrian over Lloris any day of the week

Do we look at these with blinkers on or do these muppets have a point?

I don't think our squad is bad at all. In need of improvements, balancing, trimming and perfection, yes. But it is simply not a bad squad.

Several (most) play for their national team. Some are right out stars. 1, maybe 2 are in a nigh world class category. The vast majority are likeable chaps.

I also think we often have a hard time accepting that a club like Spurs is well off with having a few "average" players in the squad. It's OK to be "average" for a top 5 team on our budget.

We do lack maybe 1 or 2 additional true stars. Especially in midfield, the contemporary version of Ginola or Modric, or maybe an attacker like Teddy, Lineker or Klinsmann. But from a general perspective, I feel good about our squad.

Queue the "optimistic" and "doh" ratings.

First of all, Adrian over Lloris is just stupid and that fan has his own Wet Spam blinkers on

As for the rest, I wouldn't say our players are underrated, we just need the consistency that 'rated' players show. For example Bale, when he played, he was consistently great for consecutive seasons.

Our squad is a decent squad and like the final league position shows, we probably do have one of the best 5/6 squads in the league, and at times we see glimpses of what they are capable of, but the negative, being they are still a bit hit and miss throughout the season and I think it's the consistency factor that will change people's view of this.

We have had a way of grinding out wins in the later seasons as opposed to hammering teams, so maybe that make our players seem a bit underwhelming.

I can see why outside fans might not rate the likes of Rose, Bentaleb and even Chadli (despite his goal return), but Kane and Lloris? That's just silly.

if you're under-rating Bentaleb after actually watching him, then you simply don't understand what makes a good footballer.

He was a monster at times last season.

Rose was excellent for the majority of it too.

If you'r relying on highlights clips to make judgement then you're not going to see enough of what makes these guys so good.

After Gareth Bale I learnt that yes, most opposition fans are bitter and/or clueless. I lost count of the number of United fans who used to claim Nani was a level above him, and that even Valencia was a better winger. Then even at the point where we sold him to Real Madrid there were rival fans claiming he was not worth more than 40 million and gooners claiming Walcott was still a better player (yes!).

One other thing to bear in mind, which has really become clear to me in the last year, is that as we're 5th we have pretty much become a direct rival to everyone bar Chelsea/City and the newly promoted teams. Arse/United fans want to always talk us down as they know finishing below us means dropping out of top 4, Saints/West Ham/Everton want to talk us down as they know finishing above us means their club will be in the top 6. It's a tough spot to be in.

That's exactly why I think they probably are! Relying on Match of the Day as the source of their information.

You should of told them that Spurs are a unit not a team of individuals, hence our consistency over the last few seasons despite the EL distraction. The spammer needs to find another boozer where he can boast, perhaps one near QPR's ground?

The problem is @ryantegan lives in an area rampant with West ham fans. Way too many of them and most genuinely believe that the whole country is as densely populated by them.
