Are we getting ahead of ourselves?

I was quite surprised when I saw the negativity after the result against Chelsea. Personally, I think 1-1 is a very good result considering we lost 2-4 last season. I know we have had a great start to the season but I have a feeling that some of us suddenly think we are the best in the PL when we are clearly not. Drawing against Chelsea is always a good result, especially in this game after we were being bullied in the second half and considering the insane amount of squad depth Chelsea have.

I just wonder whether all this media talk of a title challenge has made people think that we are world-beaters.
CL should be our one and only aim and maybe a trophy as well and looking at United's result today, it might be easier than we think...

Normally 1- 1 would be good and I would have accepted it against Chelsea but...........the game was there for the taking andwe blew it. It was not just down to Chelsea pressuring us for the 2nd half but the fact that at we allowed them to. We, in my opinion, did not make any tactical changes (Sandro) when Chelsea did (Mata). That is what is so frustrating. 2 points dropped as oppose to 1 gained in my opinion. So no we are not getting ahead of ourselves, we are naturally responding in frustration.

I think there may be an element of that. 1-1 is a decent result but I think what's frustrating is that we didn't play anything like as well as we can in the second half and we let them dominate us, until the Torres sending off anyway. I thought the game was crying out for Sandro to come on to help us win the midfield battle, but whichever way you cut it, it's a great sign that we are disappointed with drawing with Chavski, and it shows how far we've come. We're still bedding in several players yet are sitting pretty at the top of the table. The future's bright, the future's lillywhite!

Pretty much every game we play at home is there for the taking. In the grand scheme of things a 1-1 draw with Chelsea at home is not the end of the world.

We lost 2-4 last season missing key players. What's frustrating is we were clearly better for the first half and it seems like AVB told the team to play defensively afterwards and we instantly lost control of the game. But yes, 1-1 is not a bad result.

No, we need to be in the title hunt IF we want top 4. Arsenal, Man C, Chelsea and Man U (don't be fooled by their current position) will all be trying to win the league, if we don't do the same then we will fall short of the CL spots for sure.

I think people are disappointed today as we're the home team and want to win all home matches, not always possible but the 2nd half we were just sitting ducks until Torres saw red. If it weren't for that i'm positive we would have lost.

A lot of the people sitting round me today were embarrassing at times to be honest.

Mourinho is a wily old fox IMHO and outsmarted AVB today with his subs. After winding up Mata over the last 2-3 weeks by not taking him into account, Mata's inclusion today changed the game and nearly won it for them.
Yes I'm dissapointed we didn't continue to press our adavantage in the second half however a 1-1 against Chelski is perfectly acceptable as AVB still doesn't know what team works best for him under the specific circumstances.

I'm disappointed at drawing against Chelsea and after a disappointing 2nd half performance.

Both of those things are good things.

If Torres had got his deserved red card for clawing at Vertonghen's face while the score was still 1-0, we would've won the game.

A fair result in the end. We are still 2nd in the league having played two top rivals. It's looking good. We will only get better.

They brought Mata on. A player who is comfortable with the ball and able to dictate play. We were light in CM and it was obvious instantly. AVB must have known that. He could cope with that at Porto because of the comp they faced and the relative quality of Port's FBs against that comp and play a Moutinho type CM as well. Our FBs, and this isn't a criticism of them individually - other than wishing they were both legends - aren't that strong. So, instead of being to overload and keep possession with them pushing up we had 2 CMs playing in a slightly stretched pitch doing, or not doing as it turned out, the job of 3. Couple that with a Mata with time on the ball and well, he damaged us.

We needed to go 3 in the middle with a proper DM and get back possession and control of the middle of the pitch. Then look to try and attack them. As it was we did neither anyway, somewhat predictably when you lose control of a game. You don't get as many chances to attack.

But whatever. We didn't lose and none of us perfect. It's a shame AVB didn't see it though because at assnal he did and it was a different game, ignoring the result. No idea why he threw that out of the window tbh.

Problem is with the press saying we're title challengers and all that, finishing 4th suddenly seems dissapointing to some people. The fact Arsenal are playing well atm doesn't help at all also tbh.

BTW, this does not mean i would not be ecstatic if we came 4th, it is what we are aiming for, and is what we are achieving atm. But some do seem to bit getting carried away a bit, agreed, but then, who doesn't?

We started to lose the game before Mata came on. It's down to less runs forward from the fullbacks and wide players, less movement up top, playing narrower. It was a clearly defensive setup, I think AVB wanted us to play counterattacking after we scored but we were just defensive, not countering.

I judge our progress on a few things

1) how we so against relegation contenders. - expect wins home and away

2) how we do against midtablers. - home win away draw

3) how we do against top 6. - don't lose

They are the measures. Overall we are about even but I am optimistic considering who our top6 contenders have played so far.

We did indeed. The pressing game tapered early. made it even more of a no-brainer for me, what with all my experience of top flight coaching and management, to get an extra body into the middle. At least get control of the ball again if all we're doing is edging deeper and deeper and failing to counter-punch.

We're still a developing team. Winning big matches isn't just ability, there's a mind set and psychology involved with it too. If you've done it before you can have the confidence and know how to do it again so will be on the better foot.

For many of these players it's their first time playing all together in a big match and you really learn about your team mates in those situations.

Chelsea are weakened at the moment but still, are no bad side. Getting a point from the game was a good result especially considering how we performed that second half.

I'm sure if AVB could play that out again he would too would have thrown Sandro on as the game was calling out for somebody of his style. He would have sat in there and broke everything up allowing us to get a chance of possession and a hold on the game.
