I see the BBC is reporting on Balotelli to Liverpool. It's really getting scary how much Rodgers is being backed, and with Chelsea and Arsenal also having made some key signings, and Everton having signed Lukaku on a perm, just how far behind are we falling? We the latest ITK suggesting our targets aren't going to come to fruition, combined with us hoping that last year's signings magically start to all come together, has me feeling that are we going into the season with greater risk and blind hope than our competitors. I'm worried that with everyone else strengthening, if we were to under-perform this season we could see ourselves ending up 7th or 8th.

I wonder, did last year's scatter gun approach to signings harm our ability to subsequently make guy ones under Poch?
I'm not bothered about the Lukaku signing so much. I have a lot of time for Everton and Martinez but one decent signing does not suddenly up them to the next level.

Liverpool are flailing about like we were last season. It didnt work for us. Not everything is solved by the obsession with new players.

Except most of their signings are proven in the PL. It's not the be all and end all, but it's certainly an important factor.

Still don't understand how signing Lukaku is Everton moving forwards... Did I dream that he was there last year?

I have to agree with the op here. I feel a little underwhelmed with our signings so far and lack of backing the manager as usual which was a big problem under avb. Defence is still a weakness and although Dier looks very promising he is still very young. We can't be relying on a crock like Kaboul and Michael fucking Dawson!!! Another centre back is needed and we are fucking around with this musacchio guy who seems to be next to impossible to prize away. United are shite but they are backing their manager with another signing and will probably make others before the window closes.

We are behind regarding our turnover and stadium plans are being made to help rectify that.

Liverpool have sold their star player and don't think Ballotelli really relieves that. I don't see Ballotelli as a bigger signing than the ones we made last summer to replace Bale.

Our step forward is getting us to play as a team and getting a manager that fits our club. We really need to lose our obsession with the transfer market, it's not the only way to progression.

I understand the concern of the original comment but it is clear that - unless you have a billionaire take over your club - you need to be sensible when investing and I think our chairman is the best around at that. After our spending foray last summer and having such a sizeable squad, it only makes sense that we should focus on developing the players we have, rather than buying in more.

True, but their signings carry a lot of prem experience whereas ours did not. Could make the difference.

Everton? They've spent over £30m just to get to the same level that they were last year. With Barkley out for around 5 months and their paper thin squad, let's see how they get on in four competitions.

Am I the only one who thinks we have a better squad and team than Liverpool?

Suarez ultimately made the difference last season, whereas before we were far superior for a few years.

I'd have Sturridge in our team granted, but nobody else.

Coutinho is a good player, but I wouldn't swap him for Eriksen say?

Quite agree, plus I don't rate their manager to 'tactic' his way out of a paper bag, especially playing midweek which is something they didn't do last year. Watch Henderson turn into Jenas this season.

**Disclaimer - I didn't hate Jenas and that's not meant as a slight, only that people will see he's a run of the mill Premier League midfielder not some all inspiring box to boxer...

Isn't the reason Liverpool did so well last season because they didn't sign a mass of players and stabilised their team which allowed them to maintain their development as a team? Surely by signing so many players it's going to ruin what they had...

Lukaku is rubbish and Everton are certainly not going to be challenging for anything.

Man Utd certainly haven't left us behind. If anything they've got worse.

Arsenal haven't left us behind either. Arsenal are Arsenal. They'll flatter to deceive. Doesn't help that they've bought players that weren't needed.

The only teams that can be said to have left us behind are City and Chelsea but one bad season could see us make up ground on them.

I think you're missing the point somewhat. The whole thing with Liverpool is not the individual players, but rather the team system which players slot effortlessly in and out of. And although I can't stand the little runt, let's not pretend Sterling isn't a better option than Lennon. My point being, players like Henderson, Allen and Lucas really aren't very good, but they know their job and the system the team plays in allows them to excel. I wouldn't really even take any of the United players from two seasons ago when they won the title aside from V.Persie, and really, a lot of United's players have been very average for a long time, but that hasn't stop them achieving a lot of success

I think it's because they went from relying on astute loan signings to spending a relatively inordinate amount of money on one player. People might take it as a statement of intent but in order to be able to maintain a concerted push for 4th place: season in, season out, they'll need several more of those kind of signings.

I really really don't want to go down the road of having to defend the scouse filth, but I personally think the idea that Suarez carried them single-handedly isn't credible. Don't get me wrong, of course he made a huge difference. But when we had Bale, who, in my opinion, is a superior all round player, we weren't engaged in the title race at any point, even when Bale was complimented by the likes of Modric. While I think that some of their signings have been duds, I think some have been very astute and it's complacent to assume that with Suarez gone they'll be back lingering around 6th place as they were when we had our strongest squad. They may dip a position or two, but I think they've got all they need for another top four finish and I'd be very surprised (although delighted) if they struggle this term, despite their wobbly opening game.
