BBC Live Text
12:56 GOAL- Arsenal 0-1 Tottenham - Emmanuel Adebayor (10 mins)
This one will count. Awful defending by Arsenal's Per Mertesacker lets Jermain Defoe in down the left and Wojciech Szczesny can only parry his low shot into the path of Emmanuel Adebayor, who gobbles up the loose ball to fire home from close range. Let the goal rush begin!
13:03 RED CARD - Tottenham's Emmanuel Adebayor (17 mins)
These games are never dull are they? What was Emmanuel Adebayor thinking here? Only he knows. The Spurs striker launched himself into a late, wild and high challenge with studs showing on Santi Cazorla, who was lucky not to have his leg broken.
Not surprisingly, referee Howard Webb produces a red card and Spurs are down to 10 men with more than 70 minutes of the 90 to go.
13:09 GOAL - Arsenal 1-1 Tottenham - Per Mertesacker (24 mins)
Yep, told you. Great work by Theo Walcott down the right sees him get to the bye-line and deliver a delicious cross for Per Mertesacker, who had ambled forward to find space in the area and plant a powerful header past Hugo Lloris. That's his first goal in English football and makes up for his mistake for Spurs' opener.
13:27 GOAL - Arsenal 2-1 Tottenham - Lukas Podolski (42 mins)
This is a scrappy old goal but Arsenal won't care because they are ahead, and before half-time. The build-up is neat enough, with Lukas Podolski exchanging passes with Mikel Arteta and darting into the area, but the finish is an untidy one - with Podolski's shot being blocked by William Gallas but still bobbling past a helpless Hugo Lloris and rolling into the corner of the net.
13:30 YELLOW CARD - Tottenham's Aaron Lennon
Aaron Lennon clatters into Thomas Vermaelen and that's a booking. It's also another free-kick for Arsenal, who scent more goals before the break.
13:32 GOAL - Arsenal 3-1 Tottenham - Olivier Giroud (45 mins)
Santi Cazorla is fouled on the edge of the area after Tottenham clear that initial free-kick but referee Howard Webb plays the advantage and Arsenal reap the rewards. The Spaniard makes his way down to the left bye-line and his low cross is turned in by Olivier Giroud. That was a crisp finish but the Spurs marking was poor.
13:34 HALF-TIME: Arsenal 3-1 Tottenham
13:48 KICK-OFF - Ten-man Spurs have made a double switch with Clint Dempsey and Michael Dawson on for Kyle Naughton and Kyle Walker.
14:03 GOAL - Arsenal 4-1 Tottenham - Santi Cazorla (60 mins)
The points are safe for the Gunners, now it seems to just be a question of how many goals they will score. Their fourth goal is a superbly-worked effort that sees Theo Walcott gracefully free Lukas Podolski down the left, and his low cross is swept home by Santi Cazorla.
14:12 YELLOW CARD - Tottenham's Sandro
Sandro goes into the book for what can only be described as persistent fouling rather than a stand-out bad challenge. Arsenal restart play quickly and release Theo Walcott, who is back on the right now. He takes the ball into the area and holds off Michael Dawson but dwells too long before shooting and Hugo Lloris denies him from a tight angle.
14:14 GOAL - Arsenal 4-2 Tottenham - Gareth Bale (70 mins)
Hang on, they're not going to come back here are they... are they? Gareth Bale shows again he can do things pretty much on his own if he has to, running at the Arsenal defence and arrowing a low shot past Wojciech Szczesny.
14:15 SUBSTITUTION A couple of changes to tell you about, one for each team. Tottenham bring on Tommy Carroll for Tom Huddlestone and, for Arsenal, Aaron Ramsey replaces Jack Wilshere.
14:34 GOAL - Arsenal 5-2 Tottenham - Theo Walcott (91 mins)
We now have the same scoreline as we saw in this fixture in February, after a completely different game. I'd say Theo Walcott deserved a goal for his performance today and now he has got one. Spurs give the ball away and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain bursts forwards before sliding the ball across the area for Walcott to beat Hugo Lloris with a precise low finish.

Arsenal play host to Tottenham in the first north London derby of the season with both sides in need of the win.

The Gunners go into the game one point and one place behind Spurs looking to get their top four bid back on track.

Arsene Wenger's men were held to a 3-3 draw at home to Fulham last time out and their last win in the Premier League came against Queens Park Rangers last month.

Andre Villas Boas has his first experience of the north London rivalry hoping to bounce back from two defeats in their last two outings against Wigan and Manchester City.

It is the first meeting between the old rivals since Arsenal came from two goals down to overcome Spurs 5-2 in February.

Arsenal
Arsenal will assess the fitness of several first-team players ahead of the game.

They include striker Olivier Giroud (hamstring/calf) and winger Theo Walcott (buttock muscle). Midfielder Mikel Arteta (hip) is another causing concern, along with full-back Bacary Sagna (leg), but goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny is close to a comeback from his ankle problem and could be included in the team for the first time since September. Midfielder Jack Wilshere will be available again after suspension.

Winger Gervinho (ankle), defender Kieran Gibbs (thigh), midfielder Abou Diaby (thigh) and Czech midfielder Tomas Rosicky (hamstring) all continue rehabilitation.

Tottenham
Tottenham playmaker Mousa Dembele is out of the trip to the Emirates with a hip injury.

Aaron Lennon has recovered from a hamstring injury, and Jermain Defoe and Kyle Walker, who also had hamstring complaints, should be fit to play.

Long-term absentees Scott Parker (Achilles), Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Younes Kaboul (both knee) remain sidelined.

Arsenal look set to recall goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny after two months out with an ankle injury.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Aaron Ramsey made their comebacks last weekend after respective hip and groin issues and are expected to start.

Tottenham remain without Mousa Dembele, who is still troubled by the hip injury that has kept him out for a month.

Jermain Defoe, Kyle Walker and Aaron Lennon all suffered hamstring problems last weekend and will be assessed.

Amidst the thousands of words written and spoken about this game in our world of social media, when messages can be sent around the globe in nano-seconds, it might be worthwhile considering something penned in a cave near Salamis by the great Ancient Greek playwright Euripides:
"There is nothing like the sight of an old enemy down on his luck".
How Arsenal fans will be relishing Tottenham's run of three defeats in four games. How they'll dream of heaping more pressure on Andre Villas-Boas. They'll point to their proud record of just one home defeat in 21 north London derbies (in league and cup) over 19 years, and to last season's comeback from 2-0 down with three goals in 11 minutes either side of half-time to win it 5-2.

They'll crow about a front three of Walcott, Giroud and Podolski hitting form at the right time. They'll point out that Tottenham have kept possession poorly against the better sides this season.

But Tottenham supporters will have their answer in ribald song and considered thought too. They know that the Gunners will wilt under pressure. In 2008-09 Spurs were 4-2 down at the Emirates with two minutes to go and drew 4-4. Two years ago this weekend, Arsenal were 2-0 up and lost 3-2 in Tottenham's only away league win against them since 1993.

They'll know Gareth Bale has the pace to rip Arsenal apart, that Arsene Wenger's team has looked vulnerable at left-back and that Aaron Lennon has a good history in this fixture.

There are personal scores to be settled. Bacary Sagna broke his leg at Spurs last season. William Gallas and Emmanuel Adebayor were once Arsenal heroes in this game. Now they return as pantomime villains.

Both managers are under pressure. Emotions and stakes are high. Ever since Arsenal were elected to the First Division in 1919 at the expense of Tottenham, who suspected skulduggery in the voting process, these two clubs have loathed each other.

For 25 years I've been commentating on these games. I'm still no closer to being able to predict what on earth will happen and one set of friends is sure to shun me for a while if either side wins!

matchfacts.jpg

Head-to-head

    • Tottenham have lost only one of their last five north London derbies with Arsenal: their 5-2 away defeat in February.
    • It is almost two years to the day (20 November) since Tottenham's last win at the Emirates - a memorable 3-2 victory having trailed 2-0 at half-time.
    • There have been 29 goals scored in the six Premier League meetings between these clubs at the Emirates - an average of 4.8 goals per game.
    • One hundred goals have been scored in 32 derbies between the sides since Arsene Wenger took charge of Arsenal (the Gunners have scored 61 compared to Tottenham's 39).
Arsenal
      • This is Arsenal's worst start to a season since 1982-83, when they had only 14 points after 11 games.
      • Arsenal have won only two home games so far this season: the 6-1 demolition of Southampton and the 1-0 win over QPR.
      • The Gunners conceded just six goals in their opening nine matches in all competitions but have let in 16 goals in their last eight games.
      • Olivier Giroud scored the Gunners' first headed goal of the season last weekend against Fulham.
Tottenham
    • Defeat at Manchester City last weekend ended Tottenham's run of three successive away wins.
    • Andre Villas-Boas's men have kept only one clean sheet in 11 league games this season, October's 2-0 home win over Aston Villa.
    • William Gallas and Emmanuel Adebayor are two of four players to have appeared for both clubs in north London Premier League derbies, along with David Bentley and Sol Campbell.
    • Adebayor, who has scored seven Premier League goals in this fixture - equal most with Robert Pires - is one of only two players to net for both teams in this fixture, the other being Jimmy Robertson.

In all seriousness.... although this has the feel of a 'mid 90's' derby, I'll try and remain positive.

I just pray to god, AVB makes the right decisions and we at least give it a good-go.

It really does doesn't it? Which is particularly odd considering we're currently above them in the table.

I just can't see any way that their midfield doesn't completely outclass ours. with Parker and Dembele as options I think we could nullify their threat and pose our own, but I just don't see how we can get into this game.

Agreed. Sandro's going to have to have a monster game for us.

I'd like Bale to pull his finger out too.

Flattered to decieve a little to much for me, in some big games especially.

I disagree. I can see Huddlestone chasing them down well and Sandro really dictating the pace of the game with his passing. I also think Friedel who is rightfully keeping that French captain out of the side will roll back the years and pull off some wonder saves and keep the score down like he did last season in this fixture.

This match was summed up brilliantly in that it's a mid 90's NLD again.

Obviously there's nothing more I'd want them to see us kick the ever-living shit out of Arsenal... but I'm just so demoralized by all of the injuries it's really hard to be optimistic. Have we had any good unexpected news this year?

We won't win another premiership game until dembele is back in the team. I hope I am proved wrong.

I think for the first time in many years both sets of fans feel a bit down before the derby. Normally there is one set of fans up for it.

We can't get out of first gear and they are stuttering too. The media are more likely to sharpen their knives with AVB though.

Dembele is a huge loss for this game. I'd like to see ade start again, time for him to score again against the arseholes. I'm glad rvp has gone too.

we need to keep the ball, against city we played like the inferior team, even though they do have better players we should play with confidence.

Against united in the first half and chelsea for 15 minutes of the second we played like we were the better team with confidence and took the game to them. Do this to arsenal and they won't have a response.

Going to be tough, but have to keep the faith and remain optomistic. Hoping for a pre-Christmas present from the team.
