If Saka lets his contract run down he can pretty much have his pick of most clubs in Europe and a whacking great signing on fee. It’s hard to think of a logical reason why he would stay. People will point to Kane, but we had much more optimistic signs we were getting top 4 and challenging for titles and stadium was coming so there was some logic to Kane signing. With Saka it’s a vague hope this Arteta project might come good. I think the culture of younger talented players at clubs outside top 4 letting contracts run down is becoming more ingrained. It’s very bad news for some clubs not only losing best talent but also for nothing.
I was thinking about this recently. It certainly seems to be a trend for players to run down contracts. I don't know that it's a good thing for competition though.
Imagine a club like Southampton who have typically relied on selling arcademy talent and recruiting well to then sell on for a profit. If they no longer have that income then they have even less chance of progressing.

"This thread will talk about a statistical anomaly that damaged Arsenal last season."

To cancel our game in jan - caused them to play us a few days before New Utd- a must win game (biggest game of their season) with injuries, suspensions and a loss of confidence because we humiliated them. They brought it upon themselves the lackluster fools.

I love it how things work out sometimes. They had our original game cancelled because they thought they'd lose, only for the re-scheduled fixture to come along and bite them in the arsenal. Doesn't get better than that.

What a delight winding gooners up about saka leaving. We’ve had to put up with it over Kane every summer for the last 5/6 years so great it’s the show on the other foot now.

On Saka - I guess their best option now is to get a fairly high release clause in there to at least extract some value from him in a couple of years time (like Villa did with Grealish).

They bang on about their young squad prevailing in the end but us getting top 4 potentially cost them any chance of him playing for them after his 24th birthday. It's beautiful when you think about it. There could be a similar situation with Martinelli too.

I started a thread on free transfers becoming the norm. Utd have just lost their record signing on a free transfer and a number of high quality players are available on free transfers this summer. Mbappe and Nketiah have been signed on very high contracts to stop their free transfers.

I believe this stems from the high transfer fees being asked by clubs. I remember Villa and Man City negotiating for a full summer over Milner. Our own Berbatov and Bale went on strike to push their moves due to the frustratingly long negotiation process.

With the huge money in the Prem, teams are no longer reliant on transfer fees for funding. A team like Southampton are better off keeping a player like JWP than sell him for £40m. It's possible that without him this season they could have flirted with a relegation battle which would cost them much more than £40m if they went down.

Haaland is leaving on a release clause. This made BD a good club for him to join as he got to play first team football and develop into a top class player. BD then made a healthy profit and the player leaves without the frustration of excessive negotiations.

If players want freedom of movement then the next logical step would be for release clauses to become the norm.

Lose in jan it wouldn't have mattered to the extent it did.

Also, players would rather have a huge signing on fee going to themselves rather than the clubs getting the money with a transfer fee. I suspect that is what is really behind it. That and freedom of personal choice.

Definitely a big part of it.

It's strange how long ago the Bosman ruling was introduced but for high level players was a big rarity.

Yeah, and I would assume big clubs will be quite worried. You already had pretty hefty agent fees "leaving" the clubs coffers. If players take signing on fees it essentially means TV money > clubs > players / agents vs the money essentially being a bit of a pyramid scheme between the clubs. Inc coming back to clubs who spend big because now their cast offs still get 10s m.
Now of course, if thta means Woolwich get close to nothing from saka and Smith Rowe, we'll, happy days. But do think overall its probably bad for the clubs / Football as a whole.

it’s feels like we have only recently reached the tipping point in terms of finances on offer where the risk of running down a contract in return for a payday / sign on outweighs the risk of not having the security of a contract and picking up a serious injury

Last I heard, there was some sort of controversy over this 'transfer' due to him having previously signed a pre-contract with Wolves, so they were up in arms about it, understandably.
