Agree, also the fact he could have joined this window instead of being loaned back until summer makes it a little more disappointing. We must really want a HG player for that last spot which I can understand TBF, it is a fine balance. Ether way im going to be watching how he develops, I think he will do very well in Atleti's system as he will be given quite a prominent tactical role once he has made his way into the first team. As for us pretty good bet that its ether Wharton or Gallagher if we can get them to lower their price.

But wouldn't Vermeeren have become HG by the time he's 21 if he signed for us now?

Thats what I thought initially but apparently I was mistaken and he would have had to have joined at the start of the season to qualify. Essentially if he joined now he would qualify as Club Trained in the eyes of UEFA, so for CL and EL etc, but for the PL he would be Non HG after he turns 21. The same will be for Nusa.

Very different players but who has a higher ceiling Vermeeren or nusa ? The outlay for both would have been north of 60 m this window to not have directly involved .
From the limited viewing I have (now) done on both players, nusa looks like he could be "potentially" that absolute excitement attacking machine with an unlimited ceiling.

These kind of players are rarer imo than the brilliant midfield players that Vermeeren could "potentially" become.

However Vermeeren may be a "safer" bet long term also for that same reason.

If I was to choose one for us, I am happier to gamble on the more speculative but potentially more brilliant option of nusa, as I think midfielders (albeit vermeeren may be one out of the box) are a little easier to find.

Just my humble opinion though on limited YouTube viewing from Australia

Shame to have missed out on him. More than a touch of Frenkie DeJong about him imo. Wharton looks a very decent player too though so I hope we take a punt on him and we have Devine gaining experience too (although a different sort of player), so our MF options going forward would look great with Wharton onboard.

Sounds like Palace are trying to get Wharton.

I think Wharton looks quality. He’d get starters minutes at palace so maybe it’d be the right move for him, but they seem like a pretty directionless club at the moment.

Am I right to think that Vermeeren cannot play for Atletico in the CL this season? Or have the rules changed?

If I’m correct, why pay extra to get him now? It’s not like they won’t qualify for CL next season - especially considering that Spanish La Liga is the most probable (right now) to get one of the two extra spots (for 5th in the league).

Wharton is the one we should be going for. He oozes class, almost reminds me of Rodri in his style of play as a 6. An elegant ball playing 6 with some aggression.

I'm guessing Vermeeren thought he had more of a chance of getting into the matchday squad and playing more minutes at Atletico than us? Could this be one of the reasons? Any other reasons?

UPDATE. Antwerp insists on a quick sale, but the Vermeeren camp does not want to decide yet
The transfer of Arthur Vermeeren (18) to Atlético Madrid is not yet a done deal. Although the Spanish top club has agreed with Antwerp on a transfer fee of 27 million euros, the midfielder does not want to make a hasty decision. Atlético will have to convince Vermeeren on Friday, when he travels to Madrid.

All that remains is for a certain Antwerp CB to tell him about his own unsuccessful move to Atletico and how he prefered English football.
