Have to correct that - he was never a centre forward, he was an inside forward usually wearing the No 10 shirt.

Oh ho...after the misty nostalgia comes conflict :)...Greaves no 8 , an Inside Right in the football language of the day .

Gilzean the no 9 more of a centre forward I suppose , but not really . Then again he may have been a number 10 , memory can be imperfect .

Not only for England, but also when he came to Tottenham, John White was playing at inside right in the No 8 shirt and Jimmy displaced Les Allen at inside left in the No 10 shirt.

Eh? Why's that then?

I'm bitter at how incorrect the article is.

That book came out a few months ago, I bought it for my dad for his birthday. Bloody good read too!

I didn't read your title, nor did I see the date of the article right at the top.

They should pin the tail on me at birthday parties, and cast me in childrens movies about big green monsters falling in love against the odds.

Thats interesting .

I've done a bit of research and everywhere is he described as an Inside Right

They didn't mess with numbers back then so No 7 was right wing no 8 inside right no 9 Centreforward 10 Inside left .

Also I found this describing his 60s Spurs shirt as a no 8

http://www.footballshirtculture.com...orn-spurs-60-s-jimmy-greaves-umbro-shirt.html

But finally he was my total hero and I would never play anywhere except Inside Right no 8 at the time...

...and I would always dribble round the keeper

mebbe he played a few times in no 10 , but JG was a no 8 mainly I reckon .

I may be getting on a bit but I'm certainly not senile yet!

I know that during the early/mid 60s Jimmy definitely wore the No 10 shirt. No question about it so thanks SS57 for confirming it with those superb nostalgia trips.

OK well ,he must've worn both at times . I was late on the scene (66-67)

...and there no doubt he was no 8 at that point .

And finally its great ,a coupla hours before a getting to the last 16 CL Glory night , this board is crammed with oldies rowing about Jimmy Greaves's shirt number 50 years ago :)
