evrey ne keeps sayin sign bentley replace lennon get wright phillips get j.cole but know one has mentioned ashley young. imo i think young on the left and lennon on the right would be brilliant i think he would be the ideal signing for the left he has evreything pace, brilliant crosser of the ball, deadly at free kicks, he got a good shot and we could probably get him for around 10-14 mil. thought?

We would nt get him now. Missed our chance when he left Watford

Nah. Blackburn aren't filthy rich, I honestly think itd take £20m to get Young, which we'd never do, lets remember that he wanted to come to us, but we weren't willing to pay £9m for him...

AY has had a good season and, in footballing terms, to have him at LW right now would be good. However, Villa wouldn't sell and certainly not at the price they got him for. Could we get much better for £12m, £14m ? Absolutely definitely (OK there's a premium for prem experience but still)

Bentley has a lot in the cabinet and we're far, far more likely to prise a player away from Blackburn than Villa at the moment. However, the price would, again, be well over £10m, we already have several rightfooted wingers, attacking MF and he's a former Gooner

Always cuts back onto his right foot to cross. This isn't a problem for me really, but definitely would be to our fans.

This is true, he stays out wide, runs at the defender as pace buts cuts back for the cross similar to Malbranque

I guess it's more to do with buying players you know have experience of doing it every single week in this league, rather than buying Quaresma (who flopped hard at Barcelona) and finding him unable to really make an impact on our league (like Zenden)

Yea I do mean like Bent, a great player, proven in the Premiership, who is scoring goals now that he's being given more time.

Worry not about our left side, we'll have Bale back. We don't need two left-siders who can barely put a foot in. Steed has the 4th most tackles won in the entire Premiership. I don't know how we can just axe that kind of input to our team without a second thought.

Young or Bentley. Both wicked-cool young players who would add heaps to the team. Doesn't mean the end of our beloved Steed because Steeeeeeeeeeed can play CM?? Or even replace Lennon - now there's a thought. Infact I think Steed would so awesome on the right with Hutton!! 100x better cross than Lennon and 100x a better footballer than Lennon. Even without the match for pace.

The thing a lot people seem to be overlooking with Steed is how he works in tandem with a FB. Once that FB overlaps, Steed slots in and covers. And when they are back, he sits in front and protects them. He does both of these excellently, especially considering our attacking (sometimes attacking over defending) FB philosophy.

Alan Hutton doesn't need anywhere near as much protection as Chimbonda and Bale do on the left. I think Steed has found a great niche for himself in the team. Plus, it's not like we need the extra attacker. We score boat-loads of goals for Idlepete's sake. We need to stop leaking goals, and taking Steed - 4th most tackles won in the Premiership - out of the position he's made his own isn't going to help us with that.

You're scared of change lol.

I don't for a second doubt Steed's ability. i agree and honestly think he's one of our most important players. What I'm saying is - he might be double-good on the right than he is on the left. Just because Hutton is a good defensive full-back doesn't mean he can't play with a defensive-minded RM...

And what's wrong with having a weak defensive left back playing with an attacking minded LM? Manchester Utd do it with Evra who is not the best defensive fullback.. yet they cause so much terror down that wing.

I'm losing myself here. You're probably right lol.

We would never buy him now, after refusing to pay £9m for him before, I don't think Levy would embarrass himself by paying double that now.

as has been pointed out, we could have bought him, and I can't tell you the number of sages on here who informed us how overpriced/waste of money he was/would be. Let's just say there were quite a few of that opinion,

in the end, though I was a big AY fan, they actually convinced me he wasn't worth the money (DL obviously took the same view- not necessarily on SC advice :) though I still rated Young a lot higher than the typical 'waste of money' poster at the time, but I could see it was quite a gamble

Young has had a good season. I get the impression that he was on a list for Spurs targets before Villa paid up. I reckon he was just too expensive given what we knew about him at the time. I still think that was a fair decision given the facts at the time but it turns out that he might have been worth paying up for him. Classic Type II error.

No point going in for him now though. Don't think he'd be better than Steed in the bigger picture who offers so much more in his broader game. For one thing Steed gets back excellently and his timing on tackles is outstanding.

Not just on the list but Spurs were in negotiations with him....but Villa were willing to pay more than Spurs were.

Yes, hindsight's a wonderful thing. And, armed with it, I still think Levy was right not to go above his final offer.

yep 57, as I say I rated Young a lot higher than the naysayers, but as I also said I could see why people were saying the figure was getting too high. It was a close call for me ( though not for some), I expect it was a close call for Levy too, he passed and at the time I understood that, and still understand it.

It was a gamble, in retrospect we should have taken it, probably, but as you say hindsight etc
