At the time I definitely agreed he wasn't worth £10m.

In hindsight, yes it was a good buy, but I still maintain it was a hefty price at the time.

Without a doubt he would have chosen us, I still see him in Watford all the time, so I would think he'll want to come back down this way at some point.

2 years ago he was not worth the money. People would've kicked off at us having bought yet another pacey right footed player to play on the left.

He has blossomed into an excellent player far beyind what most people expected. You win some, you lose some.

I thought the way he waited for the Everton defenders to pass the ball to him was Genius.
Still think Aaron Lennon will be a better player in the long run.

I understood he was a gooner anyway.

Probably not.

But he did score two goals last night, and a fantastic winner. I can't see many of our players completely fooling Lescott in the 94th minute, away at Everton to score the winner, only seconds after Everton had shocked them with a late equalizer.

And it's not like this was his first good game. He's been consistently good now for 18 months. The dude had 17 assists, 8 goals last season and he is well on his way to better that this season.

p.s.: you meant to say hadn't but wrote had.

Did u watch the arsenal game ?

Frankly don't know the point of this thread - kicking ourselfs for missing a player? What's the point...some gambles pay off some don't. Routledge's the same mould but that didn't come off, while Lennon has.

Young was good last night but EVEN in hindsight he's not worth £10m.

Pace+some skill - so many young attacking players out there have this all over the world. It's got to be something special or more that you are willing to give a punt. Even till today I don't see anything Young, or indeed Lennon, has that would justify that sort of price tag and their wages in the long run.

Goals alone would justify £10mil+ in a young player IMO.

He's an arsenal fan

Who gives a sh!t? So was Defoe, so was Bent, (so was Harry Redknapp alledgedly). The fact is that a large majority of black kids growing up in london worshipped Ian Wright and then Thierry Henry... Does it mean we shouldn't still look to get them into our academy?

He is a good player but he acts like a massive cock. His celebrations for both goals taunting the Everton fans made me want to hit him. Reminded me of the Villa game this season, he ran to his fans celebrating, then turned to the left with his arms wide open running past the spurs fans, over the top IMO, and should of been booked.

Read the thread. Someone suggested he once said he was a spurs fan. I was correcting this notion.

yep, I thought we missed out on a good young player at the time.

It's proven to have been a great player we missed out on!

Hard to compete with martin O'Neill though! He's a charmer!

Yes.

Are you seriously comparing going past a really good PL defender, making a fool out of him in the way and finishing it beautifully to Lennon's goal, which was a easy tap-in?

If you are talking about the 4-3 Jenas goal I understand. Jenas is capable of these goals, from time to time. And I said we have very few players capable of this. I can only think of Modric and maybe Jenas.

We did miss the boat with him which was a real shame.

I guess the only thing that made me slightly concerned back then is that he's another right-footer who plays on the left but he actually does a very good job there (as he can on either wing).

In hindsight it seems to have been the wrong decision not to have signed him.

But at the time it was the right decision, 10 million for a vastly unproven player at this level was a massive risk and one im glad we didnt take. Just because he has become a great player under O'neill at villa does not mean he would have inevitably flourished under Jol/Ramos/Redknapp at spurs.

Ashley Young > Lennon by the way though.

More assists, more goals, more valuable to the team in general.

A mistake not signing him for sure.

But he was a gamble and he was on the market where we seemed to be moving away some what from our mission to buy all the bright young British talent (although we still bought Bent)

Villa took over in that respect, bought up the likes of Young, Davies, Milner, Sidwell etc and it has to be said that currently they are wreaping the benefits.

Not worth 10 million then and not worth it now. Only English clubs would pay such a inflated fee for someone of that quality.

now BMJ is saying he wanted to buy him!

http://www.northamptonchron.co.uk/football/Jol-I-wanted-to-sign.4798769.jp

Martin Jol has revealed how he tried to sign Aston Villa sensation Ashley Young for Tottenham during his time at White Hart Lane.
The England winger is being linked with some of the biggest clubs in Europe after bursting on to the international scene following a string of impressive performances with Villa.

Jol, now manager of Hamburg, who take on Villa in the UEFA Cup on Wednesday, is backing Martin O'Neill's side to challenge Arsenal for a top-four Premier League spot.

Jol, sacked by Spurs are twice leading the club to fifth-place finishes, said: "Villa are a great side and we were interested at Tottenham in signing Ashley Young.

"He was a bit too expensive in the end at £9m.

"But he has gone up a level since then.

"(Gabriel) Agbonlahor is one of the quickest players in the Premier League while (James) Milner is also an excellent player.

"They have got the talent, as we had a couple of years ago at Spurs, and the future is for them."[/QUOTE]

At the time it was a big gamble but in hindsight paying £9.75m for a young winger who consistently is amongst the top assisters in the league is a very good deal.

As I recollect we were hoping to sign Bale at the end of the season anyway and he seemed a better prospect and hopefully he still is.

We were trying to sign both, Bale=LB & Young=LM.....
